Herbal Essences contains no animal ingredients, and is not tested on animals. It is, however, owned by Clairol, who is owned by Procter and Gamble, who tests.

Do you know if it's only vegan in the US, cos I couldn't find any info on the UK website.
thanks :)

Hmm... I dunno. I would imagine that it couldn't be too different.

On the back of their products, it says 99% animal byproduct free.

On the back of their products, it says 99% animal byproduct free.
Hmm... that's odd. Mine says that it has no animal byproducts.

Yeah, that's interesting. I've never seen it say "99%" animal free any time I've bought it.

what kind is yours?
Seems like someone said the Fruit Fussion brand wasn't vegan. Doesn't say on their website. :(

proctor & gamble are horrible, they still test and probably always will.
in the US we have VO5 & tresessme, and citre shine hair gel. all are not tested and are standard supermarket hair care. i do not know if these brands contain animal byproducts though.
i hope you can find something in the UK.

99% animal byproduct-free isn't the same at 99% plant-based. It could be 99% tomatoes, and 1% sea salt. That'd still be vegan. :p

Schmeeb, that might be a good recipe for ketchup, but would you really wash your hair with that? :p
Sorry, my turn to be the smartass. :D

muncher, I seem to remember that the Herbal Essences say that they contain no animal ingredients and they have the bunny symbol too (in the UK). However, as Cissy said, they are made by Proctor and Gamble.
In the UK you can get 'original source' products -- the vast majority are vegan and they are scrumptiously lovely :)
I have the whole household converted to them now - we have lemon, orange & grapefruit, lavender, spearmint . . . The shower gel works great as a shampoo, too!

I called Herbal Essences on Friday and they've removed the wording from their packages stating they are animal free. The girl told me that was because they couldn't guaruntee the animal-free status of ingredients from their suppliers. She sais "WE don't put any animal ingredients in our products, but we can't be sure what the companies we get our ingredients from do. Nice. Another product in the do not buy list for me.

Thanks for information wendy. Boy, that's a bummer. That stuff did my hair right!

Yep. Procter & Gamble are big animal testers.Makes me so mad. I use to love Herbel Essenses. Now I use Tresseme & Vo5. I avoid all P&G products. They are such evil when it comes to animal testing! Grrrr. lol

Grr, that really bugs me. I hadn't read these posts as of ten minutes ago (when I took a few minutes to walk to the Dollar Store during a slow slump at work) -- I just went and bought some Herbal Essences conditioner and shampoo after finding out that Dove was horribly animal tested.
Meeehhh!!!

I switched to Tresseme. So far, so good, but their new split end shampoo & conditioner has gelatin in it, so watch out for that! :)

rincaro - Have you tried Tresseme's Hydrology products? I liked them, but stopped once I looked up the manufacturer (can't remember it). This link (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=69655&catid=11936&trx=PLST-0-SRCH&trxp1=11936&trxp2=69655&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SRCH) actually says 'not tested on animals.'

Stupid P & G. They make just about everything I was using originally. As a result, I've needed to go out and buy new, cruelty-free versions of everything. This is more or less convenient except when it comes to issues of shampoo/laundry detergent. I am allergic to tons and tons of things, and my skin is unbelievably sensitive. I'm still trying to find a cruelty-free shampoo that doesn't send my scalp into rashes, etc, and we're using up our fragrance/color-free Tide. (Any other kind screws me up pretty severely.) When that runs out, we're going to begin experimenting with the cruelty-free alternatives...but I have to say that I'm not looking forward to it. Hopefully, using a more natural detergent will cause less problems. We'll see. I know we're not going back to P & G, but I'm angry that they have to inconvenience me with their totally unnecessary animal testing.

I used to use Tressemme when my hair was really long, but I couldn't find the kind I used to use. I'm growing my hair out again, so I'm trying to keep it really healthy. Sometimes it seems like a losing battle with this hair stuff.
