From the Gardenburger website:

Unveiling our New Burgers
Foods high in carbs are not high on our list. So we've reformulated all our burgers so that they have more protein and less carbs. Same yummy taste but without all the carbs.

Well it looks like Gardenburger has jumped on the bandwagon. I'm really upset that they're messing with my favorite foods. I don't know what ingredients they actually changed or how it has affected the taste--haven't actually tried them yet. The only thing I've noticed is the grain-based Santa Fe burger has been replaced with a black bean burger. Not necessarily bad. It's just annoying to have low carb shoved down my throat when I really don't want it. Atkins and vegetarianism are pretty antithetical in my opinion.

Anyone tried the "new" Gardenburgers? Any noticeable difference?

Another ironic quote from the same page:

The fads come and go. So we're making it easier for you to eat right and figure out what that means to you.Haha

That's nearly impenetrable. All due respect to Gardenburger and other veg-friendlier companies capitalizing on Atkins while pretending not to follow trends, but: :whack:

I don't know about "new", but I love the spicy black bean burger....

It doesn't really bug me that they're doing this. The carbs in veggie burgers aren't usually "good" carbs anyway.

Something else, Gardenburger is also slowly changing their packaging. As you may know, their packages have thus far been full of pro-animal and environment quotes and facts, which is a real rarity in mainstream packaging.
I've noticed new, more traditional packages are starting to trickle in, minus the pro-animal and pro-vegetarian slogans.

Sounds great to me. More protein, less carbs,

I've noticed it, too. It's all about courting the mainstream consumer, a purchaser more concerned with their own health than animals and the environment.

i just went to their website and emailed them!!!

they are using SOLACE as their soy source now. SOLACE is owned by DUPONT the largest chemical company on the planet! SOLACE is not organic and totally GMO. DUPONT tests on animals.

i told them id be as comfortable eating a DUPONT burger as i would a dead tortured uncooked rat with worms crawling all over it. im pretty pissed, i loved gardenburger.

I saw the new package yesterday. Very corporate looking. :( I guess if it results in more sales everyone benefits.

That sucks about Dupont. It seems Gardenburger has done a complete about-face. I really admired them for their packaging. :-/

I'd rather eat a dupont veggieburger than an dead tortured uncooked rat with worms crawling all over it, but that's your choice. Then again, I don't have a problem with GMOs.

its not just the GMOs' although im trying to cut down on them. i just dont like the thought of DUPONT making food, especially supposedly vegetarian food.

They provide a ton of soy to the prepackaged food industry. You may be giving up a lot more than Gardenburgers soon.

Which is probably just as well. You can make yummy homemade veggie patties from whole, organic foods bought at a Farmer's Market. They're surprisingly more satisfying, believe it or not.

It really does upset me that Gardenburger is selling out, I saw the new packaging the other day with "only 4 carbs!!!" plastered on everything like 20 times, it was like walking into an atkins nightmare. Vegetarian companies aren't supposed to sell out to fatkins!

I don't know why it's considered selling out to Atkins. Some of us vegans would like more low-carb options.

And if I thought they were only doing it because vegetarians wanted lower carb foods then that would be fine, if they were worried about making things better for our health then that would be one thing, but they are catering to a fad diet that is in opposition to everything being a vegetarian is about. I'm a little peeved that when I go to a resturant I know exactly how many carbs is in half the menu, but I have no idea if its really vegetarian, much less vegan. Gardenburger was one of few things that was still ours, now its a low carb product.

im glad they are catering to the atkins diet people. anything to lessen the amount of meat they eat the better!

i have not heard back from gardenburger (big suprise) but SOLACE/DUPONT did email me back. they stated they give their customers a choice of GMO and NON-GMO soy. i wonder what gardenburger is using? hmmmm...this is for the best anyhow. i love tofu, TVP, and other soy but i am concerned about the health risks. so im trying to limit my consumption of soy alltogether.

i just cant get over the fact that DUPONT makes food. creepy...

Gardenburger is probably getting their asses kicked sales wise. So far the only independents left in the regular supermarkets are Yves and Veggie Patch.

Lite Life is owned by Con Agra (2nd largest beef producer in the world).

Morningstar Farms (Worthington, Natural Touch, Loma Linda, Morningstar) is owned by Kelloggs.

Boca is owned by Kraft which is a holding of Philip Morris (sorry Altria).

Those are no light weights they have to compete with.

I though Yves sold out too.

I'm not sure what Veggie Patch is.

I don't understand what the big deal is with DuPont. Why don't people like them?

DuPont = Chemicals = Toxins = Animal Research/Testing = Poison = Geneticly Modified Orginisms = Usual Large Corporate Bullying = Etc. Etc.

Oh youre right, Yves is owned by Hains. Veggie Patch can be found in the produce section next to Yves and Lite Life products. At least around here. I dont believe they are vegan though.

I wouldn't mind the more protein, as I have trouble eating enough of it unless I really pay attention. But I always liked the pro-animal and pro-environment packaging, along with the fact they were proudly non-GMO. Oh well. I've been cutting back on processed soy anyway, so this just makes it easier. I refuse to eat GMO soybeans.

OT - a few weeks ago I got a $50 gift card from the local grocery store in the mail. Supposedly it was for having my name drawn for using the store's preferred card while purchasing some boxed meal from ConAgra - Homestyle Bakes or something like that, which I've never bought. Anway, the gift card was paid for by ConAgra. I considered not using it since it seemed dishonest, since I never bought their product. That lasted until I remembered ConAgra was a huge meat producer. So, ConAgra bought me $50 worth of vegan food. :D

I was never a fan of gardenburger, but I can see where it would be annoying to some that they've jumped on the bandwagon.
I'll probably just try the new product anyway down the line, simply so I know for myself how it is. Maybe it's not a huge difference, maybe it is, you don't know until you try. That's the way I see things for myself.

And Boca's no good either cause for one thing their food tastes like corpse, plus they got bought out by Phillip Morris (aka: animal testing GALORE)... Can we all buy and island and start a commune or something cause there seems to be nothing left here.

Oh youre right, Yves is owned by Hains.

I won't buy food from the same company that makes my underwear. :dizzy:

Isn't Boca supposed to taste like meat? Isn't that the point of fake meat?

You can certainly build your commune, but I think that'd be far worse than selling out to Phillip Morris and DuPont.

Not HANES, silly! Hains!

I do have a problem with GMOs (did you know that there are much higher rates of soy intolerances/allergies when people eat GMO soy?) and I'll be disappointed if Gardenburger is using them. I will definitely still be eating my Burgerville Spicy Black Bean Burger and fries, though. I gotta have the occasional fast food treat.
