I wrote a post about this on my blog and in my Yahoo group, but I wanted to make sure and call attention to this here, too. My friend, Paul Shapiro, at Compassion Over Killing (http://www.cok.net/), as you may already know, did an interview with me (http://www.cok.net/feat/virgilbutler.php) that he put up on the COK site that also included footage taken inside the Tyson slaughter plant in Grannis where I worked.

What wasn't reported at the time that the video went up was that there was a much deeper investigation going on. That was the bigger purpose behind his visit and the main reason for the infiltration of the plant to get the kill floor footage.

Well, now the investigation is over, and COK did a wonderful job putting it all together. They followed the entire process of the life of "broiler" chickens, from hatchery to slaughter, recording countless hours of video and painstakingly reviewing industry research articles. They put together a documentary called, "45 Days: The Life and Death of a Broiler Chicken (http://www.chickenindustry.com/cfi/documentary/)." They also launched a new site (http://www.chickenindustry.com/) to inform people about the suffering endured by these "meat" chickens. Their focus was on Tyson and Perdue, since they are the leaders in the industry, and they visited facilities in three states, including the one in Grannis.

They did a wonderful job on this, and I thought that it would be a great resource to share with those that are either working to convince people to quit eating meat or that are stubbornly clinging to eating it themselves. I watched the DVD that he sent me, and they really did make a powerful argument as to how much suffering is involved in the raising and processing of these innocent creatures.

There is just no justification for treating sentient beings this way. None at all. They did an exceptional job of making this important point. Too bad the industry doesn't feel that way. They even illustrated that point rather well by using the following industry journal quote:

“Is it more profitable to grow the biggest bird and have increased mortality due to heart attacks, ascites, and leg problems, or should birds be grown slower so that birds are smaller, but have fewer heart, lung and skeletal problems? A large portion of growers’ pay is based on the pound of saleable meat produced, so simple calculations suggest that it is better to get the weight and ignore the mortality.”

I hope you find the site informative and share it widely with others.

Cool. $8 shipped is pretty cheap for a DVD, I'll have to check it out.

By the way, congrats on getting your Letter to the Editor printed in yesterday's USA Today. Was trying to find a copy of the letter online, but it doesn't look like they put them on their website.

No, they don't. I only found that out after writing to the author of the original article. Too bad. I never saw it. If anyone has a copy of it, please let me know. I would really appreciate getting a copy of it for my scrapbook.
