I inqiured to Jane cosmetics about animal-derived ingredients in their products and here's the letter I received.
Dear Rachel,

Thank you so much for emailing us at jane! We’re always psyched to
hear
from the people
that use our products.

You wrote to us because you wanted to know if we use any animal derived
raw
materials in our
products. The only ones we use are Lanolin/Lanolin by-products and
Stearic
Acid. The
Lanolins are used in our lipsticks and the Stearic Acid is only used in
the
Oil-Free Liquid Make-
Up. Both of these ingredients are common to a variety of products from
cosmetics to creams,
lotions and deodorants. If you would like information on specific jane
products, we will be
happy to send you the ingredient lists.

Thanks again for emailing.

Sincerely,

Molly

Cool....I was hoping there was such a thing as cheap vegan eyeshadow :p. I definitely have to go buy some this weekend.

Heh. That's funny. The only thing I *have* of theirs is lipstick and the foundation stuff. Both of which I bought before going vegan... Which .. come to think of it... That stuff must be pretty old and funky. Maybe I should throw it out. ::doesn't wear make-up often::

I went to Target the other day and purposely checked every single brand of lipstick in the store and none of them were vegan. If they didn't have beeswax they had carmine. I was feeling low about it, but then I checked the prices on most of these tubes and realized that Hemp Organics and Zuzu stuff was only two or three dollars more anyway. The drugstore stuff averaged about $6 to $8 and I can get Hemp Organics for $10. Sometimes the "pricier" stuff isn't all that pricey after all. You might want to check. BTW this all occurred in Southern California where everything is supposed to be more expensive than most of the rest of the U.S.

I have a stick of Hemp Organics which I bought without checking the label assuming it would be vegan... only to get home and discover carmine. However, it's a really deep red shade. I figure other more neutral shades are probably vegan.

Hmmm..I wrote to them before (maybe 1 1/2-2 years ago) and was told that the Stearic Acid was *not* animal-derived. I had specifically asked about that ingredient b/c it was in something I was interested in (pressed powder I think).

Bummer :(

FYI. Jane Cosmetics is owned by Estee Lauder. I love Estee's stock; can't say much about their cosmetics though since I don't use them.

Almost all Hemp Organics colors are vegan, but some have carmine. Different Daisy has a list of (and only carries) the vegan colors. I printed out the list and I take it with me when I buy HO at the HFS. They're the only vegan lipsticks I've tried that come in deep colors and have staying power without being drying.
