I have been wanting to try a new skin care line. My skin is very sensitive and I have rosacea so I am not able to use many lines. I was thinking of trying Philosophy so I e-mailed them to see if they test on animals and use animal by-products. This is the response I got "We don't test on animals however we cannot gaurantee our suppliers of our ingredients do not." What do you make of this? Would you just not even try it? I am vegetarian, not vegan.

Thanks for your opinions.

Many companies have their own non animal testing policy but buy ingredients that are not guaranteed to be cruelty free. Its tough to find one that is truly and completely cruelty free. I believe Avalon and www.lamasbeauty.com are both good lines to try. I have tried lamas vitamin C facial wash and LOVE it! I use Avalon shampoos and love them. I use a sunscreen from Beauty without Cruelty which clearly states - no animal testing or ingredients and I like it - very mild, no scent. I *think* L'occitane is also a safe bet but not positive.
Hope this helps!

Edited to add that Arbonne is another good line.

this issue comes up a lot. just replied to a similar topic on another post. this has begun to be more important to me recently. as a vegetarian turning vegan, i found it hypocritical (in my own eyes, mind you - no judgments here!) of me to not eat animals or byproducts, but to be ok with putting them on my body. to this end, i've been doing a lot of research to try and make a positive change toward eliminating all animal products from my life. i've been reading ingredient lists more, making more inquiries and learning a lot in the process. surprisingly, many of the changes i've made have saved me money. i thought it would be the other way around.

to decide what you'd like to do, you may find it helpful to check out this list of faq's about animal testing (http://www.askcarla.com/ac/tempfaq/FAQ.asp?CategoryID=9&Category=Caring%20Consumer).

for your reference, here is a link to the list of consumer products companies that test and the list of companies that don't test (pdf files) (http://www.caringconsumer.com/searchcompany.html).

Thanks Wow for the links. I wish they also listed companies that use animal by-products also. Those sites are very helpful.

i also found this organization over the weekend via organic style magazine (http://www.organicstyle.com/):
leaping bunny (http://www.leapingbunny.org/about_us.htm). leaping bunny is "your online shopping guide to products not tested on animals, including cosmetics, personal care and household products."

i'm still searching for the org that will list companies that do not use animal ingredients, but this is a good resource anyway i think. by simply executing this search (http://www.google.com/search?q=list+of+companies+that+do+not+have+animal +ingredients&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N), i found some good stuff like this page (http://www.ivu.org/faq/products.html) that has information on "hidden animal ingredients." i was disturbed to see "organic" products listed as a potential trouble spot since according to this site, "dried blood, bone/hoof meal and fish meal can all be used a fertilizers." uff. can't we win??

I have sensitive skin and rosacea too, and I've found that Aubrey Organics has worked well for me. I use their Sensitive Skin facial cleansing liquid. For a moisturizer and facial sunscreen I use Alba. I like those sloughing/scrubbing creams that you use once or twice a week so I've been using Origins' sensitive skin variety. All of these products are vegan and reasonably priced. If you live near a Trader Joe's they carry the Alba products and are priced very cheaply (moisturizer with SPF 15 for $5 and facial sunscreen in SPF 20 for about $6 or $7). The Aubrey Organics stuff is available on their website and at HFS (I get mine at Wild Oats for about $7 or $8). Origins is available at their website and at department stores (pricier at $15, but you use just a dab once a week so it lasts a long time).
