A couple days ago I bought some Nature's Gate shampoo and conditioner. I was under the impression that it was vegan, and further lead to believe this by the bottle which said "Contains No Animal By-Products". I only did a quick scan of the ingredients before throwing it in the cart.
I got home, and on a whim read the ingredients a bit more closely and what do I find? CARMINE. Because the store is so far from where I live, I won't be able to take it back, and because the shampoo and conditioner together cost me $11.00, it looks like I'm stuck using it.
Granted I probably should have read the ingredients more closely in the store, but WTF? It said nothing that comes from an animal right on the frigging container. My guess is they don't consider insects as an animal, but I still think it was hugely misleading and I'm very... annoyed.

Can you let us know what kind it was, i.e., the scent or type? That would be helpful to know. Thank you.

Damn. They should not mislead their customers like that. It seems a lot of folks forget that insects are part of the animal kingdom.

Sure. It's Nature's Gate Rainwater Herbal Henna shampoo/conditioner for Natural Highlights. And Carmine is the second to last ingredient listed. Blech.

Don't you just hate that?! A few years ago, I had bought a Shi Kai (sp)shampoo ( I think it was Henna too) and it said that it was cruelty free and free from animal ingredients. While latering up in the shower I was reading over the ingredients and I found lanolin

Or you can always check google for animal derived ingredients and come up with a whole host of sites.

i had no idea that carmine was an animal ingredient. the list posted by nightshade was very helpful. i have to say you're not missing much from nature's gate. i am using the chamomile shampoo and it's not great. i need to use a ton of it in the first place and secondly, it leaves my hair really dry and frizzy. yech.
i would write (http://www.levlad.com/branded/ngcompany/ngservice.html) to nature's gate and complain.

I agree :deal:
Write to them and remind them that there are laws against false advertising, misleading claims etc! :notvegan: :whip:

According to this (http://vegfamily.com/lists/vegan-candy.htm) page, there is also a vegan source of carmine. Maybe that is what is in there?
