Lately I've come across a number of people who've claimed to have 'pet ducks' when they were little. What baffles me is that these people will still eat chicken and even duck.
One of these people is my mother, who is now on the south beach diet and I think now eats duck, fish and chicken but not red meat. She also won't eat anything thats cute, but aren't ducks and chicken cute? It kind of pisses me off sometimes, but it's her life to do with as she pleases. I can only b*tch so much.
What about you guys? Ever have a pet duck and then eat them?
In a way it reminds me of that Simpsons video where Homer adopts Pinchy the lobster, befriends him, fattens him and in the end ends up eating him as he sobs.

Friends of mine were planning to have steak & lobster for a dinner party but I told her I'd steal the lobsters and let them live in my bathtub. I think she thought I was serious because she changed her mind, even though it pissed everyone off.
I've never heard of anyone having a duck as a pet. I'm quite surprised though since Joey on Friends had a duck and a goose that it didn't start a "trend"

Yup yup, my aunt, but she's kind of an animal hoarder (takes in lots of cats, none spayed or neutered, always having kittens, it's very sad sad sad). She had a pet pig at one time. Still eats pork. Last I talked to her she had 3 pet ducks, or maybe they were geese I'm not sure. Also has a goat and several rabbits, some dogs. Guinea pigs. They had a small pony for a while before it died. She gets all these animals for her young daughter because the daughter thinks they are cute and begs her mom to get them. They go to animal trading places and buy whatever they think looks cute. They don't live on a farm, but it's a large lot (1.5 acres?) just outside of the city limits. Most of the animals are indoor/outdoor, but the ducks and goat live in a shed with a small fenced in area. She still eats chicken, duck, and all other animal products. She has said she thought it was nice that I didn't meat, but that she could never do it herself. //shrug

Well that's what I think the problem is...people think eating cats/dogs is horrible, but they eat every other animal. Why?
Someone on peta2 posted about a shirt they saw that had a picture of a cow on it, and it was saying, "If I bark, can I live?" I want that shirt. Has anyone seen it?

I love ducks. We cared for a small flock of domestic/domestic-wild hybrid ducks for about 2 years before one day they suddenly disappeared without a trace. It was really hard on us, and I still get sad when I look at pictures of them.

I have had people tell me how they have had pet sheep or calves and then when they have grown up eaten them! :(
Another person told me that when they were a kid they had a pet sheep and then they would swap with the neighbour kids so that they didn't actually eat their pet. Eating the neighbours pet and having them eat yours does not sound much better to me!
I also know a guy who has chickens, I believe they have them for the eggs and when they stop laying they eat them. He told me that his kids had named some of the chickens and that they don't eat the ones with names!
I guess the nameless ones need to have shirts saying I wish I had a name :(

I am going to have to concur here. I absolutely love ducks, and like any chance that I can get to be around them in nature. I was given a brown, female duckling once many years ago as a gift. A well-meaning friend had purchased it for me at the state fair, and brought it to my home unexpectedly. Of course, I was smitten with her when I saw her, and heard her "peep". At the time, we lived right next to the high school and our back yard was right next to the parking lot. Obviously, I couldn't have kept her in the yard. So, my only choice was to keep her in the garage, with minimal light and a kiddie pool. The poo was really difficult to keep up with, and she murked up her water 2-3 times a day. I began to feel guilty about keeping her in the concrete prison that was her home. I ended up taking her to a nearby cemetary that had a pond with ducks living in it. As I released her, she made a B-line straight to the other ducks. She flapped and flew around the pond a few times, and I would swear to this day that she looked directly at me and gave me a "thank you" quack before settling into the water. Regardless of intentions, some animals are just not cut out to be companions, at least not in the suburbs.
And NO nobody ever ate my ducky girl!

Reminds me of something my step-grandmother told me this weekend. She used to raise sheep for food, and sometimes the mothers would reject the lambs and they'd have to take them into the house to be hand-raised. They'd become pets and everyone would love them.
The weird part was that they'd slaughter the ones that weren't pets themselves, but the ones that were, they'd sell live to somebody else to kill. How is that any different? It's like the difference between shooting your own dog and shooting someone else's. Does it matter? They're still dead either way, and the ones that you killed aren't much different from the ones that you didn't. I just don't get it.

when my dad was little, they got a pet baby pig, let it sleep with them and live in the house all the time, when it got too big they went and had it slaughtered, and ate it themselves. I think its a sign of just how sick my dads family is (you know how when you have too much money for too many generations, people get kind of crazy...and eat their pets, thats what happened here)

My boyfriend's mom (omni) had a pet pig... since after the piggy died, she hasn't eaten pork (her doctor also says stay away from it.)
