bethanie

I'm a montessori teaching assistant, and today while one of the kids was snacking on some home-made soup that the children are responsible for preparing in our classroom (via a handy-dandy crockpot) a four year old pre-k boy looked at me and said, "Is this soup vegetarian Ms. Bethanie?"
I thought this was awesome. Most of these kids had no idea what vegetarian was before they met me this year. I've never made a big deal of it. But sometimes over lunch I've been asked why I eat so many fruits and veggies. They get a big kick out of the fact that I eat only 'vegetables'...I explain it by saying I eat only things that grow out of the ground or on trees. We don't discuss it that much...perhaps once every few weeks someone (other than myself, I never bring it up) brings it up at the lunch table.
I just thought it was cool that this little boy has fit this new word into his vocabulary and is asking questions. Of course our soup IS vegetarian. :)
