View Full Version : pain/tightness in my chest

In the past few days- I've noticed it more in the evening, although it does happen in the day, too- I feel a tightness in my chest, difficulty breathing, and occassional slight pains in my chest...sort of to the left a bit. I've noticed I have a bit of mucus, but nothing monumental and no coughing. I've also had some heartburn...but I don't know if heartburn can account for it or not....
Should I worry?

**Please note: I'm not a doctor!!**

It sounds like it could be asthma. Asthma tends to be worse in the evening, and an attack often starts gradually with tightness in the chest. I sometimes get a cough, but not always.

Anyway, difficulty breathing is always something you should have checked out. I would recommend seeing a doctor.

Let us know what happens, ok?

To me it kinda sounds like anxiety. Do you have asthma? Have you ever been tested? To me it doesn't sound like asthma, but, you never know. Generaly, asthma includes SOB (Shortness of Breath), tightening of chest, coughing, wheezing and the feel of "suffocation".

Perhaps a trip to the doctor would work. I know that I'd immediately get an appointment, not knowing what it could be.. and I would take what is said here with a grain of salt, as most of us don't the initials MD after our name ;)

I vote anxiety.

I have asthma and anxiety and they feel very different.

With Asthma, you are unable to breathe OUT. And it is very painful in your throat and chest to breathe.

A fullness/numbness and pain on left side can be anxiety.

I would get it checked by a Dr to make sure there is nothing wrong w/your heart and lungs though.

I think anxiety might be a possbility but I would also go to a doctor to rule out bronchitis or walking pneumonia.
Good luck Rainbowmoon. :)

Hey guys,
I have an anxiety disorder as well as OCD, so it could certainly be an additional anxiety symptom. I deal with it pretty well and sometimes I forget its there. However, I should probably go in for a physical to make sure everything is alright. I also had asthma as a child which went untreated...so it could be either, I suppose.
Thanks!!! :)

Anxiety would be a good guess, but only if you have ruled out other diseases like reflux.

Linz,
You might want to see a cardiologist. I had this kind of **** for years before finding out I had mitral valve prolapse. It causes a host of anxiety type symptoms, heart feeling like it "sticks," etc. It also makes you feel fatigued in a "wired by tired" kind of way. restless but sluggish. when I got the diagnosis and read up on it, EVERYTHING made sense. Do you notice a precursor to the attacks? I didn't which is why "anxiety" never set well with me. I had them come up randomly and not with a stress trigger.

I've read some of your other posts, and it sounds similar to me, so I wouldnt rule that out.....of course, it could just be anxiety or the asthma.

I should re-phrase. Anxiety has a pre-curser to it, a Panic Attack is merely physical symptoms. I was having PA's for months and never felt anxious. (In most people they recur because of the fear of having another one). For me, I was never worried because I thought it was just my asthma. It was when I went to the Dr and my lungs were fine that I started to worry about my heart because the Dr's did.

I did see a cardioligist and had an EKG and an Echo-cardiogram. I also had chest xrays and labs for diabetes, thyroid, etc,

They couldn't find anything wrong with me, so sometimes that body just does weird things. :help:

Thanks, dakinirawk. I have an appt. for a full physical on Monday the 15th, and I will bring all of this up then. I'm going to sound like a real psycho, though: I've requested thyroid tests because I can't seem to control my weight, I'll be asking about TMJ, and now this...lol. They're going to be like, hello hypochondriac....:)

Moonflower- I know what you're saying. Its hard to tell which it may be, because I had asthma as a child and severe anxiety about 2 years ago. I'm just going to sit down on the doctor's table and say 'give me the works'.

is it still happening? when it hits try taking some really slow deep breaths and see if it helps. definately have the doctor look into it but deep breathing might help at the time.
i actually get something similar now and then but it's not often enough for me to really be concerned, i've always thought i might have mild asthma growing up around smokers and all. anyway i'll just lean forward a bit, seems to help for some reason, and take some slow breaths and it'll go away.

i also sometimes get the feeling of liquid in there higher up, which sorta scares me, and makes it hard to breath but it only lasts a couple seconds :-/

I get that same feeling when I am stressed out!! As soon as I calm down for a day or two and feel relaxed it goes away...Hope everything is ok :)

Thanks, Ocean.
Yeah, this is still happening, but it seems to me it has happened for most of my life, just more significantly in the last month or so.
Oh, and LadyFaile, you should probably see a doctor. Feeling fluid in your lungs...you and I both no that deserves some attention.
