Hey everyone,
I belonged to the old Vegetarian Teen board, and i need help! My boyfriend and I have problems when we go to our friend's houses for parties and things, and their parents just dont understand. What can i do to help them? anyone have similar problems? My boyfriend and I are both Vegan. :)

My friends have all talked to their parents for me, but none of the parents ever grasped the idea fully, so I tote around a few snack foods etcetra and/or eat before I go over there. If it is a party or something you could tr making a vegan chip dip and bringing some vegan chips or something like that so there is at least one thing to eat there.

I would just talk to their parents politely, and explain that you don't eat animals or animal products. I agree with Inkie on bringing some vegan snacks to share... I'm a vegetarian and it has helped me to bring some meat free or vegan snacks along.. It can also help with "vegans/vegetarians can only eat tofu" or even encourage them to try more veg food. In my case, its helped to encourage a couple of omni friends to try something besides meat once in a while... I've been trying to slowly transition to vegan lately and its been hard for people to grasp that I try not to eat lots of dairy and eggs or honey...

My boyfriend's family raises cattle, so as you can imagine, its hard for them to get it. Every time i even think i might eat something there i have my boyfriend tell them i am vegan, tell them that vegans dont eat meat, eggs, or dairy, and tell them that includes many baked goods, cheese, chicken broth and fish, etc. they have heard it a few times but his mom does forget so its good to remind them. I would also keep some food in the car for back up, those thai noodle bowls in the asian section are pretty good, and i know at least the garlic, onion and mushroom flavors are vegan.

thanks,
sometimes it just gets really hard like going to the movies with them or Boy X's mom carpooling and wanting to get doughnuts and she doesnt understand why we only want apple juice......but that could still be difficult. i just need a huge poster stapled to me butt that says "i dont eat"and then give a list. And im so young!! its not easy being a teen vegan that cant even work. :( all i can do is study and yeah. :wall: i hate school! well yeah and school is just plain awful wont even start there but thanks for the tips and anymore are great!!

I would have your friends talk to your parents about it and give them the info.

Recently my friend invited me to Cape Cod with her and I knew I was going to be spending like a week with them so I just Told Sienna to tell her mom a couple days in advance and everything worked out. IF I was going to a party I would eat before I went there and if it is a sleep over or something tell your friend to tell her parents in advance about what you can and cannot eat (make sure your friend knows this information. You don't want them to make the mistake of giving you macaroni and cheese and saying something like " I cooked this vegan just for you) unfortunately some people don't understand what a vegan is and how it differs froma vegetarian)

wow yore lucky to have a vegan boyfriend!!! *sighs* ok back on topic...hmm...whenever i go over to a non vegan friend's house (which is not often at all) they usually know me well enough that they understand what i will and will not eat and then convince their parents to get something for me/us if veganchick15 is also going. like when i went to a friend's birthday party and we were having ice cream sundaes so she made her mom get me and veganchick15 a pint of vanilla soy delicious and then she had vegan choc. syrup and vegan gummie bears and maraschino cherries (which no one else liked so i ate the entire bowl i think). it turned out good. i was worried it would be awkward but it wasn't. just make sure all your friends who's house you would ever be going to know that you're vegan and don't eat a lot of certain things and then they can take care of it with their parents. also, you could invite them to your house and then have everything vegan and then they would see that you don't only eat rabbit food, as my friend likes to call it.
