personally, i'm a little miffed that Big Fish didn't get a cinematography nomination... and that LOTR got so many nominations... but hey, that's my opinion.
what do you all think?

I hope Pirates of the Caribbean does well. I rented it the other night and I thought it was fantastic.
lol.. that's the only film I've seen on that entire list.

I'm glad Mystic River is up for best picture. I'm disappointed that Seabiscuit got nominated....I didn't see it, but I hate that it glorified the horse racing industry. I would have rather seen The Last Samurai get nominated. I thought it was great. Unfortunately, there's a few scenes where horses get knocked to the ground which bothered me. I'm torn as to who should win best supporting actor....I didn't see the Cooler yet so I have no opinion on Alec Baldwin's performance, but I think all 4 of the other nominees were excellent. I think Holly Hunter should win for Thirteen.

I haven't seen either Big Fish or LOTR ( :D ) but from the trailors I think Big Fish looks better. :)

I'm disappointed that Seabisquit was nominated for Best Picture. Is that a joke? Okay, I liked the movie, and I have no problems with it's subject matter, but it just isn't a serious contender for a best picture nomination. There are so many better movies out there. Like Big Fish. heheh... Yes, I'm miffed too that Big Fish didn't get a cinematography nod.

I'm surprised by how different the Actor and Actress nominations are from the nominees at the Golden Globes. So many different movies got nominated and I haven't seen most of them. I spent all day going around looking for the movies that were nominated that I haven't seen and have rented them all and will watch them soon. I'm not prepared yet to make any predictions on any of the categories, though I'm sure LOTR will take away many awards.

My daughter and I love the movie! We saw it 4 times at the theater (alright - we only pay $2.50 to get in...) and then we bought it when it came out on DVD :)

I hope JDepp gets it for best actor - he did such a great job whith his character.

I hope Seabiscuit wins for best picture. It was fabulously done (in spite of the subject matter).

I hope LOTR wins. It so full deserves too.

I'm surprised that Scarlett Johansen wasn't nominated for best actress... I haven't seen "lost in translation" or "girl with the pearl earring" but she's supposed to be great in both of them.

I thought Master and Commander was pretty good, but not great. I don't think it deserves to win Best Picture.

Johnny Depp was great in Pirates of the Carribean. I really liked that movie but i think they'll give the award to one of the more... "oscar-type" movies.

I liked Seabiscuit but it really has no chance of winning either. Good movie, good story, but not really a best picture winner.

I heard on the radio this morning that although LOTR is up for best picture, it's unlikely they'll win. They said that a fantasy type film (Star Wars, E.T. and The Wizard of Oz) has never won for best picture. I'll be really surprised if it doesn't win.

I want Lost in Translation to win. And I want Bill Murray to get best lead actor. That was the best film I've seen in years, and Murray's best performance so far in his career.

I'm fairly disappointed that Master and Commander got as many nominations as it did. It wasn't that great. Pretty to look at, but that was it. I'd understand if they were nominated for some of the visual categories (film editing/cinemography) but Best Picture! Someone needs a :whack:

I think with all the buzz its getting, it has a good shot against a pretty weak field. Although it all comes down to politics in the end which is why I feel that RotK is up there. It has a big weight of the trillogy behind it so a win here will be a win for the entire saga. Master and Commander is not quite as impressive in comparison, Lost in Translation is likely the best film of the bunch, but without the insider status it will likely be passed over.

Likewise, Jackson may take director because his peers might be stunned and rewarded by the sheer logistical monstrosity of what he achieved. Filming three different films, at the same time, with several units, and somehow managing to get the whole mess into three very entertaining pieces is, if not the apex of artistic vision, a profound mastery of the craft of filmmaking.

I'm a bit baffled by Seabiscuit because it just seemed so, routine. A pretty forgettable movie.

Cinematography is a technical award so it does not suprise me that Big Fish does not get a nomination. Most people have a better eye for good costume and makeup than cinematography.

This years choices do seem pretty weak.
I didn't like Lost In Translation, found it to be boring, but I'll give it another shot this weekend. I did like Mystic River and would probably even give it 4 stars, but it's nothing too special. I haven't watched Master And Commander yet. And I definetely don't see how Seabisquit could beat out Cold Mountain or Big Fish in getting nominated. Oh well, I have a lot of movies to still watch. I haven't seen half of the films with Best Actor/ess bids.

I'm happy that Keisha Castle-Hughes got a nomination! And I hope that LOTR does well :)

Haha about Keisha Castle-Hughes.. Someone was interviewing her on the radio and they were like
"So are you going to go to school today?"
And she was like "Uh.. no...*long pause* My school doesn't start till tomorrow"

Haha it cracked me up (Cause yeah it's just summer holidays ending here)
And everyone screws up her name... Try sayin it 10times fast.. haha...
She doesn't have much of a chance of winning.. but cool to be the youngest person nominated for that ever!

It's kinda annoying, half the stuff nominated hasn't been realised here yet. Or it's just been realised!

I was hoping that Sean Astin (Sam from LOTR) would get nominated for best supporting actor. He was great. My vote is for Tim Robbins from Mystic River though. His character was just haunting to me. I agree that LOTR should receive best directing simply for the sheer magnitude of the undertaking. Ben Kingsley and Bill Murray definitely deserve their nominations.

(My random, unordered semi-knowledgeable opinions on the subject)

Finished watching all the movies nominated for Best Picture. Out of the choices, Lord of the Rings definetely gets my vote. Though, darn it, I still prefer Big Fish.

I absolutely hated Seabiscuit. And Pirates of the Caribbean did nothing for me, and I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan.
