Hi , I've never drank tea in my 22 year lifespan (other than iced tea  ) , I hear green tea provides many health benefits. What do you recommend ? Something I can find at a retail store.

Also , if you could tell me how to prepare it , that would be swell also. :)

Rabid sent me some awsome green tea for my secret santa gift, maybe she can give the brand again, cause I used all mine up.

I am a big green tea tazo drinker, I had some the other day (wish I could remember the brand) that I didnt care for.

I usually just stick a couple tea bags in my coffee maker, and run it through that way, and I put a couple teaspoons of cane sugar for light sweetness.

I have also been known to make cold tea with it. I have a pitcher that lets you use loose leaf tea. I just put the tea in, and hot water, let it seap for a lil while, then stick it in the refrigerator.

I have also been known to put a lil mint in with my green tea for added flavor.

Tea is, as many other things, an acquired taste, so be patient :)

I only drink green tea (and herbal teas). There are many types and varieties of green tea. My favorite type is Dragonwell, I get it bulk from the health food store. I like Tazo's China Green Tips too. I'd say it is a very good "entry" green tea.

Green tea is quite delicate and you must be careful how you prepare it, otherwise it will taste gross. The water must be hot, but not boiling (I believe 180F is a good number to aim for), and the tea should be steeped only for a short time. I usually steep not longer than a minute.

If you make it too strong, and then drink a pint of it, you will have an excellent purgative. After your body gets used to it, then increase amounts.

Once again, I'm in total agreement with oats. I'll add that the many different teas are SO different that you mightn't like green, but you might still like some herbals or blacks.

My recommendation: Try to find sampler-packs with different flavors. As for brands, IMO, Premium Stash cannot be bested (although there are a lot of good tea brands). Their green tea is really good, and their organic peppermint is phenomenal. Yogi Teas are really good and have a lot of cool mixed-up flavors. Tazo is pretty good and widely available at grocery stores and Starbucks. Bigelow is widely available, and not bad tea at all.

Hope you find something you like! I'm going to put on a pot of Irish Breakfast :lick:

I sent Muzicfan Jasmine Green Tea, which is my favourite tea right now. (Has been for about a year actually.. this may be a keeper) Its a little bit sweet and really aromatic and totally sexy, imo. lol.

I don't know offhand who makes the kind I usually buy (also the kind I sent Muzicfan) but I've found its REALLY difficult to find in the first place... so finding a specific brand might be impossible... (I'll look at it next time I go upstairs)

Jasmine green is my favorite flavor right now too. Green tea by itself is too blah. Add the jasmine leaves in there and Yum!

Oh yeah, and while we are on the subject of tea, is there too much tea you can drink in a day? For example, they say more than 2 cups of coffee a day for you is bad, is this true with tea too?

I'm drinking Trader Joes Jasmine Green Tea at the moment. My mum usually buys green tea from the Chinese Grocery Store - super cheap and lotsa bags!

I'm lazy though...I just boil the water, put the water and the tea bag in a cup and leave it. If I'm making lots, I'll put two tea bags in a tea pot and then the water. I don't take the tea bags out.

I think the deal with drinking too much coffee is the caffiene. (I have no real idea...this is just my assumption)...so I don't think that you can drink too much herbal decaf tea (and most are decaf anyway). Afterall...its just flavoured hot water, right? My favourite teas at the moment are Lemon Ginger and Licourice tea. Peppermint is always a good stand-by too

Do you all sweeten your tea? I always like a little sweetness, I can drink iced tea unsweetened but overly sweet is icky, and what do you use? I like the pomegranate syrup I got from the korean store, or honey...Or sometimes sugar...

Asians have been drinking it for centuries.

Watch the West abuse it to no end, then it gets banned!

I love green tea - very good for you - I take it like a suppliment in my diet.

Macha is a powdered green tea used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It is by far the most nutritious as all the nutrients are ingested not just the water soluble ones. You just add hot water to it, whisk it til frothy and down it - excellent antioxident!

Look for white tea too - some are very fragrant.

Like Oatmeal says green tea is very delicate and bitters easy (I boil my water to 170-175, I have a thermometer sticking out of my teapot, sounds anal, but I don't want to damage a drop of my precious elixer.) Brew the green for a minute and the white for 30-40 seconds.

We have a shop here dedicated to tea called The Tea Lady. There is some good info on their site.

my favourite green tea is sold under the name "gen mai chai". it is green tea with roasted grains mixed in. the grains, when steeped with the tea, give your beverage a very nutty and roasted taste. i love it. we drink it every day.

...my fav. It's got a nutty flavour and keeps me warm when there's a -28 windchill out (today).

I also like Dragonwell, which is famous in Taiwan, but also Oolong. I think 180F equals 60°C, which is the number in non-Fahrenheit countries. But you can leave green tea in the pot. The Chinese brew it differently: they leave the tea in a small pot, pur the hot water and drink the first round out of very tiny teacups, and pour more hot water on the tea 3-5 times, depending how good the quality is.

Green, Black, and Oolong Tea are all the same plant, and thus all high in antioxidants. For some reason (the tannins, probably) tea just dries out my throat and annoys me. And herbal teas just make my stomach queasy... so I get in a cycle of trying to drink tea for a while, and then giving it up because of throat irritation.... grrrr

Green tea has caffeine naturally. It's available decaf but most green teas are not decaf. Herbal tea is naturally decaf.

Has anyone tried Teaccino? It resembles coffee but is caffeine free and is loaded with fiber and antioxidants and is supposed to give you 'natural' energy. You brew it the same way you would coffee, and it looks like coffee. It's pretty good with Silk creamer.

The only tea I need to sweeten is plain green tea. I usually stick with jasmine green or herbal tea, and I never need to sweeten those.

My favorite kind of green tea is genmaicha. It has little bits of toasted rice and popcorn that floats to the top and the tea leaf remains on the bottom. It's definetly an aquired taste. My other favorite is Republic of Tea's Peoples Green Tea. Very mellow tasting.

Does everyone know that tazo tea is owned by StarF*cks?
