I was using my right hand for the mouse and I had to type a word and realized that I only used my left hand to do it! And it was like 6 letters long! It felt fun and it made me think - Hey, that would rock if there was a one-handed keyboard! You know, so you could use one hand for typing and the other for the mouse, and you would never have to reposition anything again. Could get some major surfing, point and click, google searching action! :smitten:

So I did a search on google's froogle and ebay and I came up with the frogpad. (http://store.yahoo.com/eca/noname40.html)

I want one, but it's over $200. I can't find one on ebay.

When I was writing that I wrote "and I wouldn't have to reposition my hand" and I started chuckling to myself. :naughty:

Oh man, this blows -
Q. Can I use FrogPad™ with either hand?
A. Our current model of FrogPad™ is optimized by right-handed use. However, it can be used with the left hand as well. The two frequently used modifier keys are most efficiently managed with the right-hand thumb. We will build a left-handed FrogPad™, with a mirror image of the keys, in the future.

I'm right handed, but I'd really hate to learn how to use the mouse with my left hand!

When do you type and use your mouse at the same time though? I can't imagine that you do this often.

Deeeeeeeeeeefinitely when using CAD, and deeeeeeeeefinitely when playing video games (because both use dozens, if not hundreds, of shortcut keys.

Also, when resizing and naming pictures, and when using google to search for things.

And let us not forgot veggieboards! (Just think, post counts could quadruple overnight. ;))

w00t!

I just found a great example! Everyone type the word affected and see how it feels with one hand!!

I wish all word typing felt that way, it's orgasmic!! :smitten:

great post mikie, and great site! I'm a HUGE fan of ergonomic design. I had been thinking similar thoughts myself about the need for a one handed keyboard (get your mind out of my gutter...) and I'm glad to see someone else had invented one!!

once again, it's like your and me, man, we have this connection, see... :D

Stewardess is longer. Its the longest word you can type with your left hand, except isn't stewardesses a word? How else would you pluralize Stewardess?

My friend was learning how to type with a dvorak keyboard. I just thought he was nuts. I'm an insanely efficient touch typer though, even though my fingers aren't in exactly the right places, I still use both hands on the keyboard and don't look at the keyboard when I type. Those split ergonomic keyboards make me kinda nuts, cause I hit some of the wrong keys with the wrong fingers, like I always hit Y with my Left pointer finger and B with my right. I only ever shift with my left pinky and hit the space bar with my right thumb.

The moral of this story, I'm a spastic typer, but don't look at the keyboard.
I think we just need a probe in our brain that makes our words appear on the screen :D

zactly... I'm so looking forward to a truly integrated, VERY personal computer with easily attached components... wearable appliances that are extremely non-obtrusive, and completely discrete. it will come someday, I'm certain!

I like using two hands just fine, especially since I like to show off that I have the (if not, one of the) fastest WPM in my grade. :sealed:

Oh, dvorak is much much easier on the hands and quicker once you get used to it.

I just try to avoid the mouse alltogether.

"the mouse", is that what they're calling it these days.
Actually the more you type with one hand the better you get at it. I get lots of experience at work and can type with my left hand pretty accurately without looking at the keyboard.

I type Dvorak. I also use a "crazy" keyboard -- http://typematrix.com (but the dvorak labelled version of course). The ENTER and BACKSPACE keys are in the center of the keyboard, and the columns are straight, not staggered.

But back to one-handed keyboards...silly people, you can all use your existing keyboards to type with a one-handed dvorak layout...right now! Although you may need your Windows CD (and if you're in a different OS, you can probably figure it out) to load other language layouts. Of course you won't have your keys labelled, but you can buy labels or make them or something....
