I heard through rather unreliable sources (the salespersn at a shop) that Nike had purchased Converse/Chuck Taylor? Does anyone have any confirmation on this?

I hope this means that the price of low tops will go back down.

NOOOOOOOOO! My beloved Converse have made a bargain with the devil!
I know it's difiicult to completely forgo patronizing companies who act socially and environmentally irresponsibly but I at least try to avoid the gross offenders (The Gap/Old Navy, Nike, McDonald's).
This really bums me out. I guess I need to start looking for new vegan, socially responsible sneaks.

Interesting site. Just out of curiousity I looked up Tyson Foods, surprised to see they mention nothing about animal welfare issues. :-/

The site seems to be more oriented to social justice issues like sweatshops and union organizing.
I've never paid $38 for a pair of Converse. There's a local place here called Shoe City where I can get them for $20. They only carry the more standard colors like black, red and white, but I can live without chartreuse shoes (but just barely).

**** THE PRICE DROPPING. DO NOT buy converse anymore. Nike, bastards who use sweatshops and a huge icon in capitalism, bought converse. please do not buy them.
Id rather pay $38 for a pair of shoes made by an adult making a fair wage than $20 for a pair of shoes made by a child being paid little to nothing.

I have no intention of purchasing Converse any longer, but I do like all canvas sneaks. What variety is available and where can they be purchased, btw. Price is an object, $50 for a pair of canvas shoes is far too expensive (do you hear that online vegan emporiums that I'd like to shop at but can't even though I'm gainfully employed because your prices are just too darn high and I know you have to charge such high prices for various economic reasons, but still I just can't afford it :().
This sucks. I love my chucks even though I had to pay about $40 for them since the only place around here that sells them is foot locker.

i see you are in new zealand. that's so awesome. i'd love to live there, but it is impossible for me to move there because your immigration law is ZERO. sucks for me. anyway, i'm going to be going to australia in february to study abroad and plan on visiting new zealand. any cool vegan store/restaurants there? also, what about cool sites to see?

I will keep buying them.

Why? If I may ask.
Even though buying converses now is supporting nike, maybe if people continue to buy them, nike will realize that there is a market for non-animal shoes and start to make more of them.

Perhaps, but I like to concern myself with humans as well, and Nike is one of the grossest offenders against human rights world wide. I'd rather buy shoes from a company that supports both workers/human rights and animals. So, I won't be buying anymore Converse shoes; I'll just keep looking until I can find something else that's suitable. The stuff's out there (Vegan Essentials has some nice black hemp sneaks for $50), it's just pricier. Maybe this will work out better in that I'll buy less stuff that's of better quality.

 I loves my Chucks. They're older than dirt and about to fall apart and I don't know what I will do when that happens.

I don't really believe in boycotting companies, but I do like to support good products, and letting companies know (by email, phone, petitions, activism, etc) that I like certain products or practices and dislike others and would like them changed. I do this quite often, and had several successes.
So if their product is good, I will keep buying it. I just don't buy into the "evil companies" thing, and given my background, I believe to know what I am talking about. Given incentives, companies will react. Boycott can be an effective measure to give incentives, no question, but but the company has to feel it too. Also, the allegations I have seen against Nike are somewhat "sketchy".
I either case, an analogy to all this would be that I continued to buy Silk soymilk even after the manufacturer (White Wave) has been bought by one of the largest dairy companies in the U.S.
If there would be enough veg*ns to make companies change by boycotting them, we wouldn't need activism. Alas, there are too few of us out there (yet!), and that's why I support activism (PeTA) against the practices of the dairy company, and still buy their product.
