Help! I have a black tie event coming up in two weeks and I can't find a warm but dressy non-wool woman's dress coat. I've got the shoes (yay Moo Shoes!) and a dress, but no coat, and it's cold here. I know faux/synthetic wool exists, but it seems they only make carpets out of it. Any suggestions?

Do you sew? If so, make a hooded floorlength cape. Choose a dressy fabric for the outside. Line it with an extra thick fabric. It wouldn't take long to make, but that way you can choose your own fabric while looking stunning.

I don't know how warm this would be...

I know some people on here have said they're okay with wearing wool if it's second-hand. If you feel the same way, maybe you could check out that option?

The VS coat is gorgeous, but doesn't look too warm. I can sew, but have no idea how to go about sewing a coat. I've never sewn with anything that thick. But I know where I could buy yards and yards of fake wool. As for second hand, I certainly am reserving that as a last resort. I own a wool pea coat from almost ten years ago that's been a staple in my winter wardrobe. But I've been on the lookout for a replacement. I'd prefer not having to admit that I do need animals to dress me, even though with second hand, I know my money wouldn't be going directly toward supporting animal suffering.

I don't think this coat is too warm either, and I have major reservations about ordering coats online from England, but does anyone else know anything about this one:

If you decide to make your own, you can find a good pattern here (http://www.sewingpatterns.com/)

Check out TJ Max, Marshalls, Steinmart or something eqivalent. I found a full length velvet coat last winter for a mere 150.00. Go for something in velvet, it's warm as it is pretty.
