Ok, so my parents are on the "south beach diet", which means they can't have sugar. They use Splenda instead. This year my bf & I are eating Thanksgiving dinner w/them...which is turning out to be rather difficult finding things for both of us to eat... Anyhoo, I'm making a vegan pumpkin pie and my dad gave me Splenda to use. My question is...is it any good? Does it taste like sugar? Will it make my pie explode in the oven? :p
I'm open to trying it..I just don't want the first vegan pie they eat to taste like poo...

Splenda tastes gross to me, it has that same aftertaste as aspartame.

Yep, I second that! But in a pie it might be okay.

I've used it in baking before when my s/o was on Atkins. I didn't notice any taste difference. But I only used about 1/2 cup in the recipe. If you're making a pumpkin pie, I can't see there being a problem.

I think that Splenda tastes good and your pie should be fine as it measures like sugar and to me tastes like sugar.
Edited to say
Ninypants, I just PM'D you a vegan Splenda Sweetened Pumpkin Pie from Chef Deb :) It sounds really good and all of the recipes I have tried from her are FABU! Shannon

Alright, I'm going to sound really dumb, but what is Splenda? I thought it was an artificial sweetener, like Equal or Sweet and Low. Is it vegan?

Splenda is made from sugar and the sugar is not filtered through bone char, and it has no calories.
It is a Vegan product and Diet Rite, Log Cabin Maple Syrup, and Gotta Have cookies have this sweetener in their products, it tastes way better than aspartame and I use it all of the time. Shannon

I use splenda in oatmeal and don't notice any aftertaste, but once I used it in muffins and I thought they had an annoying artificial taste. My parents didn't notice anything, though.

Well...I made the pumkin pie and it came out alright. I thought it had a little of an aftertaste. But my dad loved it. I think bcuz he uses Splenda all the time, he's probly used to the taste. But I actually got him to eat tofu!! :surprised
I still prefer sugar :p But thanks for all your input :)

splenda was extremly cruel in its animal testing of its product. I would boycot the company if I were you. Besides why put weird chemicals in your body anyways.
