I saw these at the store and was excited because I figured the "whole" meant that it was only black beans, no additives. I stupidly did not read the ingredients until I got home, only to find "pork lard" on the list. EWWW!

Do not buy these! I repeat - Do not buy the whole black beans with lard!!!

Thanks for the tip, I could see me buying something like that easily.

I've run into several vegetarians who weren't aware that traditional refried beans are made with lard. They've been ordering bean tacos/burritos in Mexican restaurants, and didn't realize they should ask the staff if the refried beans are made with lard or canola oil. Live and learn!

Great. Thanks a lot, Spartan! Now I'm never going to order any type of bean from a restaurant again.

Seriously - THANK YOU! We can only be disappointed in the restaurants and their poor choices.

I wouldn't sweat it too much artichoke. Only the really hardcore traditional places use lard. Most of the American-ized Taco Bell style joints use some type of vegetable fat. It still wouldn't hurt to ask, but generally you'll get an answer you like unless your eating at a Taqueria that serves tacos de sessos or tacos de lengua or something (brains and tongue, respectively).

You haven't smelled evil until you've smelled a cow's tongue cooking in a pressure cooker.
