After reading some posts in another thread about Alberto Culver products yesterday, I sent them an email to express my gratitude that they no longer animal test. I also asked about vegan products.
This was their response:
"Although we are sensitive to the preferences for vegetable derived
ingredients
the rest of the raw material industry has not yet fully caught up with
this
trend.
We do continually work to find ingredients which combine efficacy,
desirability
and economy to our consumers.
It is an ongoing process."
I hope this helps.

I knew their products weren't vegan, but I was pretty sure they didn't test on animals :) This makes me very happy... though I'm not vegan, I like to buy things that aren't animal tested, and Alberto Culver stuff (V05, St. Ives) is cheap.

just use herbal essence. it is very cheap and is not tested on animals. most of their products say that there are no animal ingredients either. being vegetarian should go further than just your diet. for example, if you do not eat animals, why put toothpaste in your mouth with animals in it? why use animals to wash yourself with? i just want to know some of the reasoning vegetarians have for using these types of products while not eating animals (well, animal flesh since you all still eat them in your dairy products).

You're basiclly saying "If you're vegetarian you should go vegan". Right? Not everyone wants to/feels like they can be vegan. That's nice if you are, but I don't think it's right to tell her to be vegan, if she wants to be she will.

i'm not telling her to do anything, i'm asking questions. i'm curious to see what vegetarians have to say in regards to those questions so its not directed towards any individual but rather any vegetarian who can answer those.

Clairol is part of P&G and does test on animals.

I saw the VO5 shampoo today and it did say that it was not tested on animals...Also noticed that Agree, St. Ives, and Freemans aren't either and they are all dirt cheap...
I likes me bargains, and shampoo are all basically made of the same active ingredients...However I do like my good deep conditioners...I guess I might still using some unfriendly stuff...I'll have to check into my brands and see...

the herbal essence line states not tested on animals, no animal products. i do see that p&g as well as clairole are the parent companies and/or distributers of the product.
so, there are actually vegans and veggies out there that use shampoo with animals in them?
personally, i use this shampoo, natures gate brand, its a bit more expensive than herbal essence. i was suggesting herbal essence because it is economical. but if its parent companies test on animals then i can see why people would not want to use it.

Even if that one product isn't tested on animals, all the money goes to the same place.

I use Herbal Essence without guilt. I contacted P&G to inform them that the only reason it is acceptable to me while other products of theirs are not, is because it is vegan. It states on the bottle that it is not tested on animals, does not contain animal ingredients, is mostly organic and packaging is made partially of recycled materials. Those are things I would like to encourage.
If we support vegan products, companies are more likely to be willing to use less animals. IMO.
It's the same reason why I'll buy a veggie burger from a main stream restaurant.

As much as Id love to never support P&G, and other companies who do animal testing etc, I dont really see it as even a possibility to avoid them comletely. Im with Erin, that buying vegan products is the way to go, even if the parent co isnt vegan. (though my #1 choice is vegan owned).
I see where falafel is coming from, why would you wash your body with beef fat, if you would not eat it? Having been a (near) vegetarian for three years who used all sorts of animal unfriendly toiletries, I can say that it just had not really sunk in. Now that I am aware of the ingredients/ testing issues, I am more selective, but its all about where you draw the line. I still eat apples with bug wax, so I guess, its just a question of what you feel comfortable with. I hold anyone who makes an effort to reduce the suffering they are willing to support in high esteem, whether they draw the line where I do or somewhere else.
Back to the topic, LOL
Erin, I think it is SO cool that you e-mailed them to about the ingredients/testing. If you would be so kind as to PM me their addy, Id like to send a simalar message!

It was a long time ago and I didn't keep the address, but I'm sure I got it from one of these two sites.

I encourage more people to email them with their opinion.
