I'm sure this isn't news to some of you, but this stuff is awesome! :bobo:
There's this vegan restaurant in my neighborhood that makes an incredible carrot cake. The "cream cheese" icing is made with this stuff. Although I had previously seen it in the stores and was reluctant to try it, the prospect of me attempting to replicate this amazing carrot cake prompted me to go buy some the other day.
So this morning, I put some on my bagel. It was sooooo good, I couldn't believe it! It comes so close to the real thing that I gaurantee it would be undetectable to the unbeknownst. My 8 year old daughter said, "Wow Mommy, I give this stuff a 10.5".

I have an irrational fear that someday it'll come out that the tofutti products aren't dairy-free at all... they're unbelievably good. I ate this stuff even when I was lacto. :) Someday I'm going to try to make a cheesecake with it. I just haven't had the time yet.

it was a bit dry for me. i tried it on some bagels. i liked veganese better on the bagels, but as i mentioned before, veganese tends to be high in calories.

It's kind of news to me, because I have never seen it nor tried it.
It was mentioned by the chef in a cooking demo last night at Wild Oats market, our local "natural" foods supermarket. But when they went to try to find a sample to do a "show and tell," it couldn't be found. So they showed the Better than sour Cream stuff instead.
So, please keep mentioning these products. Some of us are a bit slower to catch on, especially if it is hard to find on the shelves of the supermarket even if you already know about the product.

I would like to try it, but I don't want to buy a container only to find out that I don't like it. I guess I just worry like that.
The thing is, I've always liked the real stuff so much that I don't know if a substitute will cut it for me.

Hey, I have a Wild Oats here in Ft. Lauderdale, too! But I usually shop at Whole Foods - the produce is much better. Anyway, I certainly will continue to mention things like this because I tend to go ballistic over things I really like - or really dislike

I know what you mean, Misa. But the only way to find out about many of these veg products is through trial and error. Sometimes I spontaneously grab something to try, or sometimes I'll wait till I hear reviews. The Toffuti cream cheese was something that I only saw rave reviews on, and since it was in the icing of that carrot cake that was so delicious I couldn't pass it up!
Now I am anxious to try other Toffuti products, like the sour cream Joe mentioned. I hear that's a real good one.
Anyone know of good soy yogurt? I tried Silk's and it was yucky! :spew:

No luck there yet. Silk is the worst kind I've had, but the other brands aren't much better. :(
If your store carries it, try the french onion flavor of the Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese. It is fabulous, although I heartily endorse the "regular" as well.
And a very simple but very good cheesecake filling can be made with 2 containers of the regular Tofutti cream cheese, 1 cup of evaporated cane juice, the juice of one lemon, and a teaspoon of vanilla. Bake it in a graham cracker crust (just crush some vegan graham crackers and mix with melted soy margarine and evaporated cane juice) at 350 for about an hour. I top it with a mixture of berries cooked in orange juice with some corn starch and some of one of those "all-fruit" jelly products.
there are some recipes for vegan cheesecake using tofutti products floating around here on VB. :) i love the stuff too, but the health food store that carries it still hasn't gotten the new, hydrogenated oils-free variety yet.
Maybe I should try it again, now that I've been avoiding dairy for a longer period of time. I first tried it right after I gave up dairy, and I disliked it...but I've noticed my tastes changing in the months that I've been working on veganism...

Has anyone tried the new version which doesn't have trans fats? I hope it hasn't affected the taste.

you should try posting this in the "alberta" forum here! you might find some answers from fellow albertans there!

It's still hydrogenated here. Has it come out anywhere yet?
I'll check the package next time I go to Kroger and see if it's the non-hydrogenated kind.

The one I bought is non-hydrogenated. I never tried the other version to be able to do a flavor comparison, but the non-hydro is pretty darn good.

I went to a health food store in PA this weekend and they had some weird flavors of Tofutti that I've never seen before. They had chocolate, broccoli & cheddar, and creamed spinach. The broccoli & cheddar one had "cheddar flavor" listed in the ingredients so I'm not sure it's vegan....but I would think it is since they're stuff is non-dairy. I bought the chocolate (which is definitely vegan) but didn't try it yet. I couldn't find these flavors on their website, so maybe they're new or only available in limited areas.
