View Full Version : What's better, Tofurky or Un-Turkey?

I'm doing Thanksgiving this year at my house, and my in-laws are use to eating vegan. I got a Tofurkey last year and it was pretty good. I really didn't like the stuffing, bleah. I haven't tried Un-Turkey and I've heard that rocks. Also, how big do the Un-turkey's come? Last year my husband just about ate the whole Tofurkey to himself.

I'm bumping this back up, because I need some input...please?!! Someone has to have an opinion, thanks!

I've never tried Un-turkey, but tofurky is pretty good - and I am the anti-soy :naughty:
Tofurky makes good leftovers, too. Mmmm casserole.
perhaps make a casserole, instead of the "soy bird" (as my bf calls it)? that way, your husband won't eat the entire thing ;)

Thanks Krista, we got the Tofurkey last year and I was leaning more toward Un-turkey this year, but my husband's afraid of change. I might make my own, I can't really justify spending $22 on an Un-turkey. Maybe I'll find it cheaper somewhere ( I'm broke  )

I really like the Tofurkey over the Unturkey. I even like the Tofurkey's stuffing. I thought the Unturkey was just okay.

I have a lentil loaf that I make - very popular with hardcore meat eaters.
Basically, it's potatoes and breadcrumbs (think combine mashed potatoes with your favorite stuffing) inside a crust of lentils, bok coy (or spinach), mushrooms, soy sauce, sprinkle of wheat germ, onions. Slice and serve. Goes well on a slice of bread w/ gravy; like a hot non-turkey sandwich.

That sounds good. We use to have a lentil loaf for Thanksgiving then my Trader Joe's started carrying Tofurkey's for about $8. If they have them this year, I might get one for Eric and make a lentil loaf too or something similar. I always make so much food! My in-laws eat vegan about 95% of the time, but I don't remember my mother-in-law really liking Tofurkey. She does like lentil loaves though.

This sounds really good, Krista. Could you please post the recipe? I'm thinking about getting a tofurkey this year, but I would be the only one eating it and don't know if I'd like it.
Tofurky all the way. With mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes, broccoli with garlic, fried plantains, Silk nog, and pumpkin pie.

Let me know how it turns out for you and your "extras". I do suggest making it once before serving on the holiday, so that you can twink and alter it to your guests' tastes.

Thanks Krista, I'll try it this week!

I'll be trying a faux turkey this christmas (as I'll be in the united states visiting, and I can actually buy one). I think I'm going to go with the tofurky because everyone seems to talk about it. Once I move back to the U.S I plan to try every faux meat product on the market (with the possible exception of Quorn).

I thought tofurky wasnt too bad, but for the price.. I think next year i will stick with sides, or even just get the slices.

The stuffing is better with the gravy on it, as is the Tofurkey, but we also made our own to go with it. We used the "giblet" gravy that you buy to go with the Tofurkey, but found it a little bland, so we added a little wine and some spices and it came out wonderful. One thing we did discover is that the recipe that we used from their website for a glaze did not make enough to do anything but make the outside tough and the bottom scorch. Next time we will probably triple it. It only called for 1/8 cup of orange juice and 1/8 cup soy sauce w/ 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, so this was clearly not enough. This was our first Tofurkey, but it won't be our last. We intend to try one of the roasts for Christmas. Anyone have a really good recipe for that?

I'm curious- how were the dumplings?
cyberactivist- I used about 4 times as much of the glaze. I really don't see how their recipe is enough!

I did end up getting 2 Tofurkeys. The basting liquid I used was some No-Chicken broth, I don't like the orange juice baste. As for the stuffing, I wish they'd just leave it out. No one in my family likes it, I make my own stuffing. We end up with a hollowed out Tofurkey and this mound of mushy stuffing that gets wasted.
I make the Country Gravy that's on the side of the box. For the broth/soymilk mix, I use No-Chicken broth, and it's really tasty.
Krista, I forgot to tell you I made that lentil loaf last week, and Eric ate about 3/4's of it! I put in a bunch of garlic, I think that's the only thing different I really did :lick:

I'm happy to hear that! You hub is an omni, right? Did he add gravy or eat it virgin?

Eric's been vegan 7 years (just remember, we're breeding more vegans  ), but I did make a kissa** gravy for the loaf!

yes, that's right - you're the breeding vegans. I often forget which of the people here are part of the Vegan Breeding Program (tm).
I'm so glad you both enjoyed it. I will add your suggestion for adding extra garlic to it as an alternative.
