View Full Version : Script Error

Ever since I became a contributing member, I've been getting script error messages when I go into a specific thread and before I post in a thread. If I don't log on, this doesn't happen (I did an experiment :)). Of course, picking "Y" for "Yes" to continue writing script on the page isn't that big of a deal, but it's getting annoying. This doesn't happen in any other program. Any solutions?

No solutions, but I've got a couple of questions:

1- what browser do you use ?
2- which thread ?
3- what error message ? (can you post the text)

Did you try:

- remove cookies
- delete all temp.internet files ?

1. I use AOL.

2. The script error happens in every single thread I enter and every single post I make.

3. "An error has occurred in the script on this page. Do you want to continue running script on this page? 'Yes,' 'No'"

I just now deleted the cookies and temporary files and it didn't seem to help.

I think it's pretty strange that it didn't start happening until I became a contributing member. What does that have to do with anything?

I'm not familiar with AOL, I thought it was a provider, not the name for a browser.

I think there is a setting in the browser where you can choose to be alerted when there is an error.

don't worry, some one will be here soon to explain what you have to do.

Thank you, 1vegan.

I guess I don't know what browser I use, either! :)

I think AOL ships with a custom version of IE but I'm not positive. I have no idea what would cause this but I'll have someone check on it.

I'm not familiar with AOL either, but in IE toolbar, you have "tools". In tools, you go to internet options, then click advanced. Then scroll down and check disable script debugging.

Hope it helps. I'm sure AOL has something comparable to "tools".

Thanks, everyone, for your consideration.

The script debugging was already disabled. The notification was not disabled, so I checked it, applied it, and it didn't help.

I looked on the support website and didn't really see anything similar. :-/ In a couple weeks they're releasing a more stable version (it's the step right before the final version) so hopefully that will resolve a lot of these bugs. Sorry. :(

That's okay. I still like VB. :)

Michael, any word yet on the cause of this or what I should do?

Nope. They say a more stable version will be out by the end of the month so we're just waiting on that. Hopefully that'll fix it.

As a web developer who has built her own forums before, I would venture to say it's some fancy client scripting thing that your AOL browser version doesn't like.

To disable some of this fancy JS stuff, go into your User CP, and at the bottom under "Other Options", check "Do not show Toolbar". It says you may disable this option if it causes problems for you. I'd try this first. The enhanced WYSIWYG toolbar used when creating new posts uses some special MSHTML that only IE browsers can render. Now this is supposed to automatically detect your browser and not enable itself, but perhaps with AOL's version of IE it doesn't work correctly.

Robert thinks it has something to do with the WYSIWYG editor too, which makes sense since this only started happening after she became a Contributing Member.

Well, I'm not sure that I understand what you mean or that the particular instructions will work for me. When I go to the Control Panel (I assume that's "CP"), and then to the Internet Options, it doesn't have a "Other" category or any sort of category to disenable the toolbar.

I assume that I don't want to do this under any general sort of category, considering I use my toolbar all the time.

This is getting too complicated for me. :)

by "user CP", they mean on veggieboards, not your browser. it's at the top left of every page on VB right under the logo.

Ah yes, this is within the VeggieBoards site. On the top menu, click the "User CP" and from here you can edit your profile and such. This is the User Control Panel for these forums. To edit your forum display options, click "Options" on the secondary menu on VeggieBoards. Head towards the bottom to change this setting, "Use VBCode quick links..."

You can try this, but I don't think it will totally solve your problem, as I noted in the paragraph below...

HOWEVER, when I changed mine to "Do Not Show Toolbar", I do get javascript errors, but my browser settings are set so that I don't get the annoying popup, I just notice the broken javascript error in my status bar. I think the error is in the external javascript file, which one I opened it to check it out (they have a sense of humor), looks like they're using alot of browser detection, but still there's an error.

If I were you, I'd just go into your browser Tools - Internet Options - Advanced, and uncheck "Display notification about every script error". This will hide that annoying script popup box.

*EDITED* this post to give better directions on how to change these settings. I also apologize for my geekiness in this thread and the thread below. I'll go back to my programming forums now. ;)

vBulletin should create a forum coded in .NET. Then they wouldn't have to worry about different browsers nor push all that extra javascript to the client. :) Controls automatically detect browser and are rendered according to the latest browser, a down-level browser, or even to a mobile phone/PDA without the developer having to code up different scenarios for these devices. I love vBulletin forums, they look great and have tons of functionality, but someday I might like to create a C#/.NET version of them and have them free and open source.

dotnetdiva: yes, I get the same the little javascript error notice on my status bar... but it seems to only happen if I do not let let the entire page load before doing anything.

I think it has to do with the WYSIWYG Quick Reply box at the bottom of every thread, because this is inserted for those who are contributing members. Non-contributing members don't have the Quick Reply box (to my knowledge) so this leads me to believe the error is caused by the Javascript not completely loading and, as you said, the error embedded into the Javascript source itself.

That said... perhaps you could PM michael with the exact Javascript error so that he can edit it and/or pass it on to the vB developers? I have no idea what the syntax error would be.

It stopped!!!!

I went to User CP and then Options. It was checked as "Do Not Show Toolbar." I changed it to the standard toolbar, and it has stopped!!!!!!!
