View Full Version : So Natural - the soy milk made from cow's milk :(

Ok, today I was in town for interviews, and as I passed through the train station I was handed a free sample of So Natural's new flavour of soy milk, "Smooth White". I've had So Natural's soy milks before and know them to be made of, well, soy beans (as you'd expect). So I drank some. It tasted good, so I looked at the ingredients. You know what it had in it? MILK SOLIDS!!!!

When I looked closer the packaging proclaims "it's the milkiest soy milk you've ever tasted". Well duh, that's coz it's made from milk. The whole package proclaims it's a soy milk, it's only in the ingredients list it says anything about cows milk. (It does have some soy beans in it too, so I suppose that makes it all ok  ) Bah! I know it was on the ingredients list and all but you really don't expect your soy milk to be made from cow milk solids.

Anyway, the package also says "Satisfaction Guarantee - We are confident that you will like our soymilk. Have a go and try it. If you don't like it, we'll give you your money back, no questions asked". So I'm sending in for a refund. I don't care if it was free! I still want my money back!

Jeez, who was the bright spark in marketing or recipes who decided that since people wanted "milkier tasting" soy milk they'd just cut out the middle man and put cow milk in it?

They should have a warning on it that it contains real milk....suppose one has a milk allergy....idiots.

er....do they have a website?

I do have an allergy to milk, quite a bad one. I didn't finish the whole pack, I don't like wasting food but I don't want to get sick. I mean.. it is in the ingredients list so I guess they are covered legally, but the whole packaging keeps referring to it as "soy milk". I just told I milk-loving omni friend of mine and her reaction was just the same - "idiots".

Oh.. the website is

I don't buy their soy milk that much anymore, but I'm gonna check the ones I do get now and then. This is really disappointing. I've always liked this company (have dealt with them on the phone and they are very professional and helpful).

Yeah, I saw that range at the weekend, they had a “white chocolate” one and since I love flavoured soymilks I got all excited, I didn’t think it sounded very vegan but at the same time I didn’t actually think they would put cow’s milk in it(though I really shouldn’t be surprised by now!!). I just don’t understand why manufacturers do things like this!

The reason a lot of people drink soy milk is to avoid dairy, so it seems like a bad marketing idea to put milk solids in it. Weird.

:gun: :wall:

Another thing, you'd better watch out for fish in their soymilk in the future :spew:

I've just contacted So Natural, and they say none of their Soy Milks contain dairy products, or any other animal products (they mentioned there's a vegan who works there and has no concerns).
I checked the ingredients in the store (they just started getting Smooth White) and it doesn't have milk solids. Maybe they changed it?

maybe it's a different country thing? I know that lay's chips have different ingredients in Canada then in the US....

That is kind of absurd. Who would put cowmilk in soymilk?

When I was in Thailand I was eating junk whenever we were traveling on a bus because most things for sale at the stops were either junk or things without ingrediants in English (and their snacks are waaaaaaaay different than the ones here so I didn't venture too far into the weird world of Thai snacks.)

Long story short, one stop sold soy milk! I was so delighted to get something healthy for once! I bought it, and by golly, it was quite good!

Half of the carton was gone before I found out the second ingrediant was cow's milk!! WTF? I really felt sick to my stomach after that. :spew: (hadn't had cow's milk in 3.5 years!)

Perhaps they changed it, because at the time I did ring them to enquire about it. It wasn't all Smooth White's, it was the White Chocolate flavour, and according to them it "only had 5% cow milk solids" in it. I've had totally vegan chocolate soymilk before, what were they thinking?

I didn't ask them if it had at any point contained milk solids..... I'll contact them again to find out what they have been up to.
