I despise all horse racing, but this one especially so. It's all that is heard about, on the radio, on the TV, in the papers...... people thoughtlessly gambling on an activity that abuses horses.
As much as I can't wait for it to be over, it won't change the exploitation.

I hate it, I remember last year we actually had to watch it in class becuase the teacher was a relief and when we have a relief we end up watching a video or something, though I just sat there and studied Japanese. They had some big horse racing even in Adeliade around April or something and my cousin and aunty were visiting, so they all went and saw but I didn't :junk:
Anyway Horse Racing, bad, Human Racing, good.

this might brighten your day a little ...... (only if you agree with direct action that is)
from direct action (http://www.directaction.info)
Received anonymously by above ground activists:
"Under a blanket of thick fog in the early hours of October 24th, 2003, several members of the Animal Liberation Front walked onto the Yarra Glen racetrack (Victoria, Australia). Two hurdle races and a steeple chase horse race were scheduled for the following Sunday.
A hurdle jumps racing horse is on average 8 times more likely to die from racing related causes during a season, than a horse involved in flat racing. A horse involved in steeple chase racing is 18 times more likely to die.
The ALF activists dismantled the starting barrier, removing about 20 heavy steel gates and spiriting them away, along with all the nuts and bolts. The starters platform was smashed. Cables, springs and hinges were cut or damaged. The judges box overlooking the racetrack was covered in anti jump race slogans and an ALF claim of responsibility. A large steeplechase fence was doused with flammable liquid and set on fire.
ALF Australia."
(A newspaper clipping that arrived with the communique reported that the Judges box was badly damaged and the fence was completely destroyed).

Yeah I hear ya Kurmedgeon.....I absolutely loathe the Melbourne Cup. I always take the day off work every year so I don't have to deal with explaining to all my fellow workers why I don't want to go in the sweepstake. :grr:

I've never been big on horseracing, and no-one could ever understand why (including me). In the back of my mind I knew it wasn't right. I just didn't know why. I don't even know who won. I don't care. But I can't explain it to other people as they'll look at me like an even more of an alien... like instead of an alien from Mars, one from the outer reaches of the galaxy... *sigh*

And getting all dressed up for cup day...
It's weird...
I don't understand why people enjoy it.. Im not saying that in the Animal rights kind of way.. I just dont get horse racing.
