When you click on someone's profile, you see a number of referrals. What does it mean?

On the signup form there's a space for entering the name of the person that referred you. If they enter your name you get a referral. There's also a url for each person that automatically tracks it. It's located in the FAQ, which I'm not currently linking to. I'll post more info in a minute...
