Okay. My tooth broke today. Damn, damn, damn. And I am scared sh!tless of the dentist. Really, really scared. I'm scared becasue novicane does not work on me. The past three times I have been there, they have not been sucessful in numbing my mouth. About 1 year ago, I stopped trying because although I had a hole in my tooth, it didn't hurt anyways, and going to the dentist DID hurt like hell.

Well, now that tooth has kind of broken apart. I can't do anything about it until monday, maybe tuesday, or wed at the ealiest. I will be looking for a dentist that will put me under becasue I am too damn paranoid to try the novicane thing again.

My problem is that I can't eat anything. I can't drink anything either. I can't handle swallowing anything becasue the sucking type motion you do to swallow stuff hurts too much. I can't even drink enough water to take down some asprin. What should I do? Is there anything that will hurt less than water?

All I can think is that maybe you should call the dentist and ask for advice. Maybe they can give you some painkillers so you can stand to drink water and juice in the days before your appointment. For sure you need to ingest something, or you will end up dehydrated and in the hospital.

I'm sorry you're in pain and I wish there was more I could suggest...

This might not help, but you might be able to buy a topical numbing cream at the drug store and put that directly where it hurts? I don't know if all of them are made with novocaine or what, but that's the best I can offer... I hope your tooth feels better, though, I don't want you to get dehydrated and need a trip to the hospital. :sealed:

You can't go to one of the emergency dentists? :(

Novocaine doesn't work on me either -- it sucks. My dentist had to give me a bizarre regimen of advil, nyquil, ice cream and bubbalicious (!) to get my pain level down before my wisdom tooth extraction. I thought he was insane when he told me, but it did work... I don't think it would help with a broken tooth, though. :( Hang in there... hopefully you'll get it taken care of soon.

okay okay okay okay okay calm down

i'm sure i was just as bad if not worse than you. i had a TON of dental work done and the novicane JUST DIDN'T WORK!! I had a crown done on my front teeth and after 2 shots in my gums and one in my pallet i was still very uncomfortable. I told this to the dentist I am going to now and he told me a few things.
1. Dentists don't use novicane anymore. Its just the "catch word" for local anesthetic. Find out what local was used last time, ask for a different drug.
2. Local Anesthetic isn't about how much and what as much as it is being put in just the right way in just the right spot.

That being said... I had to have a cavity filled and was totally freaked, but I didn't want it getting worse to require MORE treatment later so I had it done with this very nice guy.

The worst part? The topical anethetic he put on my gums before starting so I wouldn't feel the needle go in. I think I would have preferred feeling the needle go in. I didn't like how it numbed my throat and I felt like I couldn't swallow.

I SURVIVED!!

You can to. Good luck.

So sorry to hear of your tooth...I think the best thing to do is call the dentist's office and ask if they can take you as an emergency...They do it most times...
If not then at least you can ask them for advice on pain control...Good luck! :)

That sounds awful- I can sympathise- I've had a lot of work on my teeth. I have had 3 or 4 different braces- and 10 teeth out to over crowding (small mouth- big teeth) Surely you can go to an emergency dentist- it's dangerous to leave you that long if you can't eat. Even go to the doctors or phamacists?

I remember when I had a fixed brace and one of the fixing got really loose- dont ask me how- but I was 14- one of the bits twisted itself completely around. Not only was it rubbing nastly against my teeth and mouth- but the wire tightened- pulling at all the other fixings. I was in agony- but I managed to get an appointment quickly. Braces aren't fun at the best of times- but this was unbearable.

The local anthestic doesn't work on me either- I always end up having about 7 injections and can still feel it. I always ask to get knocked out these days- it disorintates me- but it's worth it, I think a lo of the pain is in the head,

Anyway- please don't wait- go get some help- in the meantime soup may help- drink through a straw?

take care

K

Thanks guys. :) I know the people on VB can always make me feel better. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has this problem (well, I"m not happy you guys have to go through this crap too, but you know what I mean) Usually people think I"m weird when I say I have this problem.

Kat, yes. The last time I went, I had about 5 injections and then the dentist said he wouldn't do anymore. I've been to a couple of different dentists and its always the same result. I think I'm too paranoid now to be awake for any work. I'm going to try to find one that does that to me too Kat.

On a good note, I found out I can eat very small pieces of bread and noodles on the other side of my mouth so at least I got a little fuel. I also can drink really small amounts of water if I tilt my head a little to the left. The second the liquid hits the other side of my mouth, forget about it. This meant that I was also able to crush up some asprin and put it into my water and drink it that way.

Well, at least you're getting something down. Still, I hope you're able to get in for help soon! :(

Take care. :)

Okay, so I've been to the dentist who then refered me to an endo-dentist (or dontist?) anyways here is the damage:

Root canal: $945
Tooth re-building: $309
Crown: $500

Holey ****! Who has $2000 dollars to fix one tooth? On a tooth that not a single dentist has been able to numb! As you can tell, I don't have dental insurance. Oh well.

I'm getting it pulled next thurs, with sedation. The dentist reccomended that as an option and I didn't even ask for that. Its the last tooth before my wisdom tooth (which have not been taken out) so he said its not that big of a deal.

Yikes! That would be expensive! :( At least you're getting it taken care of relatively soon. Why can't you get it pulled sooner?
