What are your favorite veg publishings? I've checked out a few, but haven't found any that I'm extremely fond of. So far, these are the ones I've checked out-
Herbivore (the best so far, IMO)
VegNews
Vegetarian Journal (from VRG)
Vegetarian Times
Veggie Life
I've heard a bit about Satya, too. Is that any good? Any recommendations for others that I don't know about?
I only read "the vegan", magzine of the vegan society (england).
And I download Vegan views, I'll put on a link when I'm back at work on monday.
Are the ones you mention available on the net ?

Satya is okay, but it really depends on what you're looking for. If you want recipes and color photographs, you wont find them there. It's also like a newspaper print as opposed to the normal magazine paper. It touches on a lot of political issues and also on things I never would have been aware of before. Some pictures might be a little difficult to look at. I remember one article about people eating gorillas and they actually showed a pic of a gorilla's head sitting in a frying pan with a bunch of bananas beside it.
Hmmm, Satya doesn't really sound like what I'm looking for, but I still might get it for a while & give it a chance. I found their website, too- http://www.satyamag.com/ That gorilla thing sounds *very* disturbing. :(

i used to read vegetarian times but the then owner of it published an article on how 'you can only be vegetarian for so long' or some such bs about how after 20+ years of vegetarianism he has gone back to being an omni

Wow, what an inappropriate thing to publish in a vegetarian magazine. I mean, why couldn't he just gracefully and silently gone back to omni living and left it at that?? I haven't paid for a subscription from them in years, but I still get their magazine. I really don't find it of much interest, though, so I put it in the company's largest lunchroom, hoping to make some people consider vegetarianism a bit.

Actually, if he would have his ethics right, he would have silently left or sold the magazine. I find the story quite unbelievable!!!

even though this is an australian magazine, i thought i would recommend it anyway >>>
vegan voice (http://www.veganic.net/)
Vegan Voice welcomes all who may find the idea of veganism completely new and strange. You are greatly valued. Some of what you read in Vegan Voice may come as a shock, but I know you’ll find something that touches you, and I hope you’ll keep reading for that reason, because to have even started to read means the seed is planted, and you are curious.
clicking on this link (http://veganic.net/news.html) will show you the cover of the latest issue with an index of what's in it!
my fave magazine by far

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought that you meant that he published it in Vegetarian Times! But still, I just don't understand ex-veg*ns that have to preach to the masses about why they gave it up. Very unbecoming!

I got the first issue of Herbivore and thought it had potential, but hadn't really "found it's sea legs," so to speak. How are the more recent issues?
Vegetarian Times has recently become a lot better. A majority of their recipes are now vegan, or easily made vegan, and they even have a separate section called "Vegan Gourmet." That said, most of the articles are pretty weak compared to the information you can get on the internet, including VB.

The second issue, IMO, is better than the first. It's the "sex, drugs and rock & roll issue. :) I think that over time it'll be a really great magazine.

I get Cooking Light, Veggie Life and Vegetarain Times and my favorite is Veggie Life magazine. They have a lot of good recipes and so does Cooking Light. Many of the recipes in Cooking Light are easily veganized and Vegetarian Times is okay, I actually have made this recipe that I have posted on Chef Deborah's board several times, it is a burger recipe from Vegi-Diner in New York City http://www.vegsource.com/talk/recipes/messages/82459.html Besides that article and Marie Oser's articles, I don't like the magazine as much as the other two. I would drop it, but as soon as I did, they would have something spectacular in the magazine that would make me want to buy it again. Oh, the other recipe I have made form Vegetatarian Times is the Imfamous Chocolate PB Cake from Moosewood, I have made this cake many times and I love it, but this recipe is easily found online. All Vegans and Omnis love this cake and even my Mom's BF couldn't believe it was so good without milk, eggs and butter
http://www.vegsource.com/talk/recipes/messages/77563.html
and as you can see I made it with less fat and calories and it was still Fabu :D
Cooking Light has a Vegetarian Cooking article in each magazine with different chefs every few months. They have a Caramel Spice Cake recipe and a Pistachio Brittle recipe in last month's Cooking Light that I am thinking about making. They have also reviewed different veggie burgers and compared calories in meat analogs to real meat and are saying for readers to eat more meat analogs and to eat more soy which I really like and they even have exercises in each article. They have had recipes for soy based pudings, also. Shannon

That one looks like it would be more informational and less recipes.
No offense to the recipes in vegetarian magazines, but some just have way too many calories!
One of these days I'm going to have to start paying attention to calories again...

I like Vegetarian Times, although they have become "yuppie" ever since they hired a new editor. It's trying soooo hard to be sooooooo gourmet, I think it fall flat. I am happy to see they brought back "Carrot and Stick".
Veggie Journal and Cooking Light are my other favorites.
My hands down favorite veggie 'zine is Nosh. http://www.noshmagazine.com
The magazine is all vegan and the 2nd issue has the best vegan chocolate chip cookie recipe I've ever made. Even the omni's came back for seconds (and thirds in some cases).
The content is a mix of political, creative writing and recipes. It's fairly new and they've only put out 2 issues so far, but they're worth picking up.

LOL. That settles it. I'm a yuppie. I've actually liked the new direction and decided to subscribe for the first time now that vegans are better represented and served by the magazine. I like the layout and I enjoy the recipes, even if the content is a little slick and superficial.

I didn't notice Vegetarian Times as being "yuppie," but I never bought the magazine until they changed their format, so I don't know what it was like prior.
