View Full Version : American Apparel - Sweatshop Free Clothing
http://americanapparel.net sells sweatshop free clothes. Some of their stuff is even organic! Has anyone bought anything from them? I like that they have basic clothes without labels or anything on them and they seem very reasonably priced. They even have undies! I just sold & gave away all of my old Nike & Adidas stuff and am looking for good, ethical clothes to buy. :)

What does "sweatshop-free" mean?
This FAQ answer from their website might help you understand a bit more-
http://www.americanapparel.net/help/q22.html
Nike is horrible as far as using sweatshops. They have their clothes made in poor countries where they pay their workers *very* small fees and the working conditions are horrendous, thus calling them "sweatshops".

Thank you, Flower. At first I thought it had something to do with the material, like "sweat"shirt.

I've gone to their site before and thought some of the clothes were pretty cute, but just haven't had the money to buy any.

cool flower !!!!
we (http://www.rootsofcompassion.org) might actually be ordering from them for our next batch of t-shirts/sweaters. :)
they have a branch here in germany and on monday we're going to their showroom to check out some of their products! yay - i'm excited!
good on you for getting rid of all your nike and adidas stuff too.
That's a great website, with_open_eyes! It's cool that you might be getting their shirts for your next batch- how exciting to be able to tour their facilities!
Ya, Nike & Adidas are no good. I sold all my stuff on e-bay, so hopefully it'll stop a few people from buying new stuff from them. Plus, now I have extra cash to spend on a pair of vegan shoes I've had my eye on! :D

hehehe - i don't know about touring their facilities, i'm pretty sure it's just a showroom where they have samples of their designs etc .... but yeah, it would be neat to see their facilities and where their products are made
maybe we can, who knows! how many people get to see where their shirts are made? hehehe

I bought a t-shirt at a Bruce Springteen concert last month. It is nice. Fits well looks like its well made (it got cold right away here, so I havn't gotten a chance to actually wear it or wash it yet). I liked that I could get something at a venue like a concert, that was made in the US (where I live) and that helps out a commuity that I can locate on a map (a little geographically impaired). Since I usually have a choice, I wear hemp, organic cotton and locally made clothing.
Hope you find something you like. I checked out your link. Pretty stuff.

I was just reading about this company on their website and it seems they're quite cool.
Personally, I'll still keep shopping at thrift stores, however, I'll keep them in mind when I need to buy some white t-shirts. :D
Just thought I'd bump this up instead of starting a new thread.

I like the idea...unfortunatley, the stuff is a little bland (although bland is sometimes good) and it all looks like it'd be best on a real skinny body type.

I'm not really skinny by any means, and I own lots of their clothing, so I'd say try some on and see!
I love American Apparel for really basic stuff. It is kind of like the Trader Joe's of clothing to me. You wouldn't want to base your whole wardrobe on their stuff, but it's good for all sorts of t-shirts, pajama pants, shorts, thermals, that sort of thing.

I'm a size 14-16 with 36C boobage and I have several Herbivore girl style shirts, which are printed on American Apparel shirts. They fit nicely. :)

American Apparel just opened up a store a couple of blocks from my house. I've walked past it a couple of times, but I'm kind of intimidated to go inside because it's a little more... eh... hip... than what I'm used to. It's been a long time since I've shopped anywhere other than the salvation army. I really like the whole sweat shop free thing, though. I'm gonna have to work up the cojones to go in there one day.

Argh. :( I never know what to believe. If AA really is bad, where can we buy from? We're going to get new shirts printed up, and we were going to use AA. I mean they can't possibly be worse than the big companies like Hanes, right? I hate this.

Feel free to get the other side of the story but the article I linked is consistant with what I heard on NPR about the issue, presumably the NPR story was fact checked. I would say AA is no doubt better than Hanes, but perhaps not as good as they want us to believe, they certainly don't seem to be living up to their hype anyway.

I figured. I checked out the pay scale, and while it's good, it's not great. Thanks for the info!
...and that's part of the reason why I'll continue shopping at thrift stores. At least until Americans are so into conservation that thrift stores' supply starts to dwindle. :p

Yay, MollyGoat and MissLeigh! They do have some nice, simple pieces and they are affordable. I was just kinda like..eh, because the fabric is simple and looks like it might "fall" or "hang" on my 'fat zones'....and a lot of times, a L or XL is tiiiny..but I will have to try and see. I do like some of their t-shirts/ls shirts. You can never have too many comfy shirts laying around.

I have a couple Sailor Jerry shirts that are American Apparel and they fit nicely ( and I have real tig bitties ).
I just got a spaghetti strap tank from them about a month ago. It's really nice.

we have some of their 'classic girl' tank tops for sale with the veganica 'art with a heart' logo, as well as AA heather maroon mens shirts. they are very stylish and good quality. there is another US 'sweatshop free' company that is competing with them, we also have some of their stuff. I can't remember the name right now but I can find out.
Anyone interested can check out our Veganica Store (http://www.veganica.com/artist.php?id=105)
we will be adding some new items soon too.
i agree the thrift shop is the most environmentally friendly and non-exploitive, and allows for the most creative fashions. i personally wear either thrift store clothing or hemp, and the occasional new tee shirt with vegan message.

Not only that, but the owner of American Apparel is rumored to be a sexist creep:
http://www.nosweatshop.org/americanapparel.htm#articles
The same may be true about other business owners, but in this case the owner's behavior is even more appalling because of the business's "progessive" image.
