Alright, so I am confused -- anyone from NYC... what are cool places to hang out to meet activist/veg*n people here?

I'm a 22 year old guy, looking for cool girls to hang out with, but similar-minded liberal/lefty friends would be awesome. Hrmph -- I'm an activist, having just returned from the West Bank (Palestine)... among many of my various hats which I wear also found is title of student of life... Martial artist and an anarchist, I live what I preach ;-)

Anyway... Just curious, anyone got suggestions?

I am in the East Village btw.

Well i'm from NYC but you want cool people so scratch that.

The coolest way to meet AR people is through other friends, local AR groups or things like Veggieboards and PETA2.

Are you in school here?

I'm pretty cool. I'm a legend in my own damn mind, baby... Of course, I only visit NYC every year or so for a week or two, like this year. But, you know, I don't really like showing off how cool I am, because that's just so uncool... :D

You sound awesome. But alas I'm from little old Merryland. :)

Isn't cool really something defined by each person? :-P

I define "cool" as actually using your brain. Cool to me is about intellect, it is about awareness of the world around you, it is about non-conformity, and about so many other things. Cool to someone else may mean very different things... and let me not get started on how our society defines "cool" :-P

I am in NYC and yes I am not a guy...not cool...and not hip...I am an old Volvo station wagon, married, elementary school teacher.
Back in the good ol days I was cool. I would hang out at CBGB's and go to the Sunday hardcore matinee's, or get into huge brawls at Alcatrazz across from Tompkin's Square park, get hit by cops on horse back, or do things that i can not mention in Tompkin's or Washington Square, but alas I am an old fart now.

RichBebe, heh... cops on horseback? ah yes, the wonderful world of police states.

What are the cool places to hang out around East Village? I actually just moved down here.

I cannot really recommend any places to hang out, I haven't hung otu there in years. I go to eat but not hang out. I still think the lower East Side has some more edge to it. Thouhg it to is becomming commericalized. But go to places like Kate's (for food and people) or some the bars down there. AN old friend owns a bar on 9th and C that was pretty cool last time I was there. But I really don't hang out in the city as much as I did.

Well, I'm a cool vegan and my brothers both live in NYC. Does that count?

...

Oh. Guess not. I'd introduce you to my brother at Columbia but he's a meateating buffoon. I love that boy :p he just came home to visit this weekend. Sorry, that's not really the point.

But I might go to school in The City, and I'm a martial artist and used to live in Israel, and I'm not anarchist but I despise Bush with a passion.

I also haven't slept in about 36 hours, so if this makes no sense I apologize sincerely.

Hrm. Not to be sexist, but I just realized another reason to find a vegan girlfriend: my food bill. Must find someone who can cook. Ick. Eating out adds up bigtime, really fast, especially in NYC.

Actually I would cook 50% of the time I suppose cuz I believe in fairness and assuming she would teach me how to cook good stuff :-P LOL.

Mollie: what martial art did/do you study?

I dunno if I really should identify as an anarchist. I believe in local governance and economics quite firmly, and have worked quite extensively (particularly in times when my life literally depended on it) in consensus decision making in organizations. I have to do some more reading on the subject.

I have studied tae kwon do for four years. The dojang and at a piano are the only two places where I can lose myself in the universe and channel the energy of the ages. Ah luv it!
