I recently bought a wooden necklace. My friend told me this was totally bad of me as it is wood and it is killing trees for fashion. This made me think, as i am starting to realise the need for thought of the environment. now i'm confused and feeling kinda bad...it's just a small necklace!?!?!
What yas reckon?

The ammount of wood in a necklace is negligible compared to how much wood we use in our every day life. There are worse things for the environment then using wood. As long as we don't cut down any more old growth forests and we are very responsible with the trees that we do cut down (ensuring that they are replamted, recycling, etc) wood isn't that bad of a choice.

I figure most other necklaces (metal etc) would do more "harm" to the environment than a wooden one.

Personally, I think let's just continue working on converting most of humanity to veg*nism. If we can do that, we will reduce our environmental impact to such a great degree, that it won't really matter what our necklaces are made of.

This planet is very resourceful, if we just learn to be a bit more conscious of its limits, there will be enough for everyone. :)

I agree with oatmeal. I read the other day that in order to get enough gold for 1 ring, 3 tonnes of waste from mining is produced. So I guess compared to that, wood isn't bad.

You could start sprouting tree seeds in your backyard in small planters, then when they get to be a couple feet tall, plant them around your area, or give them to friends to plant in their yards.

That should more than make up for the 2 oz of wood used for your necklace, and you're helping the world a great deal by growing things that will help filter all those pollutants.

Wood is a renewable resource. you can easily replant it, especially if it's somehting like pine. There isn't really a shortage of wood. And I doubt that 50g of some wood of questionable origin is nothing to the huge amount of wood used in making homes, fuel, guitars, furniture, etc

Plus things like that would probably be grown in forrests where they replace the trees, not just somewhere they randomly cut them.

veganmuncher: wood is a renewable resource. The problem isn't our using it, its the rate with which we use it, and where we choose to get it :)
