F***!
I just got this message:
This is an automated Notification e-mail message from GWAVA.
A message sent to you at (my mail adress)
from veggieboards@hotmail.com
Concerning: Reply to post 'Toilet paper: how to hang it ??'
Was not delivered because it contained a virus. Our system uses virus detection
at the mail server level, and blocked the message to protect you and your data.
Please contact the system administrator if you have any questions about this message.
As a favor to the sender, you may consider sending them a note saying a message
they sent to you contained a virus. Since many viruses are self-propagating, the
sender may not yet be aware they have sent this virus.
Everybody be very aware.
This is a serious (automated) message from the network server at work.
Get your virus scanner updated.
I've mailed Michael about this.
 I've just deleted my subscriptions from the last two months.
I'm sure that I would get in to trouble when the system administrator gets 50-80 copies a day from this kind of message.......

I don't understand. Someone tried to email you rather than PM you about a thread? Why would they do something like that? Or are you saying it wasn't anyone that emailed you and a virus is like totally infecting VB's server and sending emails based on what it has in it's storage for emails?
I'm at work, email (and thus notifications) go through the email server before they go to my computer.
The mail server checks for virusses before he passes messages on.
When a virus is detected the mail is blocked and the machine sends a message to the intended receiver and the system operator.
I hope I'm wrong about a virus on or in the vb notifications, but it scared the h*** out of me. *shivers*
it wasn't a PM because they start with "a private message"
Ok, I've cooled down now.
I only got it from that thread, a slut for power notification comes in my mail without problems.
It really made me panic for a while....the thought that the system administrator could get messages every five minutes about my internet use was just a bit too much.....

oh, maybe someone shouldn't be on the internet at work......I'm one to talk though.

What else would I do with the 9 hours in between when I leave home in the morning and return at night?

I've been reassured by someone familiar with our setup that there is nothing to worry about. There are safeguards in place. If anyone else gets something like this we can check into it further.
You could always have the messages sent to an Internet address (Yahoo/Hotmail) instead of a work address.

I'm a little skeptical, because I think Hotmail uses anti-virus scanners, so I don't think it would be very likely to propagate a virus through a Hotmail account.
Some viruses or forms of malicious code "spoof" addresses and I think that may be more likely what happened here.
