I come from a family of meat eaters, and i would like to make some veg*n dishes to share with my family for christmas, (i usually just get lumped with a vegetable or two - boring!)
i'm in australia so it will be hot! Any ideas? what does everyone else do for christmas?
Thanks!

We don't have a set kind of food that we have for CHristmas. My suggestion is just dig into the recipe books! Find something new to try. BTW- I would try it out before Christmas. Just because a recipe is in a recipe book that doesn't mean it is good or that you will like it.

Moosewood has a good recipe I've used a few times as a main course for holidays. It's tofu blended with vegan cream cheese (I use Tofutti) and veggies rolled in filo. It looks pretty and festive and it's really yummy. I'll see if I can find the recipe online.

My entire family is omni, and for the last few years on holidays, I've tried to bring veg dishes. I usually just stick to something traditional that just happens to be vegan, like pasta salad. If I try to use veg*n substitutes, people tend to not want to eat it! =(
But I guess then I'll just have some leftovers!

Oh I thought of another one. How about a bean salad? It's perfect for warm weather and will be filling for you in case there isn't much for you to eat.

My mom always makes a big breakfast, including homemade coffee cake, for Christmas. That is our big meal. Breakfasts are pretty easy to veganize.

I'm from Australia too, and some of the vegetarian (not all are vegan) dishes I often make for Christmas are:
Wom bok salad (you can find the recipe for this on the back of those fried noodle packets).
Potato salad (for a vegan option, make the dressing from lemon juice, olive oil, capers and dill, plus salt, cracked pepper and garlic to taste).
Corn chips and veggie crudites with dips: hommous, baba ganouj, salsa, blue cheese and artichoke, tzaziki.
Filo pastries filled with curried vegetables, or cheese and spinach.
Herb roasted vegies: potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, onion, red capsicum, whole garlic cloves in their skins. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle over chopped rosemary, thyme and sea salt, toss and roast.
Grilled halloumi.
For dessert I like pumpkin pie, apple pie, or cinnamon biscuits served with (So Good) ice cream. A fruit plate is also good for people who don't want something heavy.

There are some really good recipes here (http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/recipes/christmas.html). There's even Thai, Turkish and Caribbean menus!
This year I fancy trying this (http://www.vegsoc.org/christmas/2006/temptart.html). Might be a bit heavy for a hotter climate though!
There's a really good vegan Christmas cake recipe here (http://www.vegsoc.org/news/2001/xmas/dec1.html) if anyone's looking!
