First green:

First green stuff of the season: turnips in the foreground; snap peas starting to climb up the home-made trellis, to the right, behind them. To give you a sense of scale: the section of trellis that has peas climbing on it is 8 feet wide. It is 7 feet high, the top is out of the picture. Yes, in about 60 days, the pea plants were flowing past the top, but I didn't get a chance to get a picture of that. There are 2 more 8-foot sections to the right, outside the picture. Jute or sisal twine, I forgot which.

Note the mostly finished compost pile at the rear, near the tool shed, and the larger unfinished st pile between it, and the peas. There is also another unfinished compost pile that you can only see part of, to the left, and behind, the turnips. If that isn't enough compost, there is another one all the way to the left, that doesn't appear in the photo. I made the sprinkler tripod myself, too.

*sniff. It's beautiful.

Seriously. You should see my sorry excuse for a garden.

I like garden photos. Maybe next year I can take some of my parents' garden.

Nice pictures Soilman. I've never been successful growing Canteloupes myself (or any melon for that matter).

I had volunteer canteloupes this year. A discarded canteloupe seed started growing in my compost pile. I trimmed away the competitive weeds, and did nothing else but give the plant a little water now and then. I harvested 3 very nice canteloupes.

Now is the time to plan for the first greens. What will you go for?

This used to be one of my favorite things to plan but damage to my sternum during the play offs of a tackle soft ball game makes gardening difficult now. Still, between avoiding the pain and keeping my job I like to give it a shot.

Right now every thing is frozen solid and covered with a crusty layer of snow in Washington State. My first "greens" are usually wild. There was a time when I planted in September to have the first onion greens, overwinter broccoli and a few kale, mache, and perslain to add to my salads and stir-fry.

What are your plans, I wanna copy.

I have dinosaur kale, broccoli, lettuce and mustard greens and spinach seedlings. That is, I hope they're still ok - I haven't checked on them in days.
