View Full Version : Huge sigs
Oatmeal

Am I the only one who sees the signatures getting displayed with a huge font?
Somehow, the styles for signatures don't seem to specify font size, and I always have the font set to largest on my computer. So the sigs are drawn with a font about three times the size of the text of posts.
Can this be changed so that the sigs have the same font size as the text of the messages?
It's huge in every color scheme, AFAIK.
BTW, I just noticed something. When I do a post preview, my sig in the preview has the same size as the text. But when I post it, it will be displayed with the huge font.
Oatmeal, hmm, I never noticed that. I keep signatures turned off myself so I never see the things.
That said, just drop Michael a PM and he can look into the styles administration for the various templates when he gets back this evening.
I am pretty sure that since the vB software is still in Beta, they have not yet finalized a styles system yet so it's probably just another bug in the software that obviously needs to be manually edited. Shouldn't be difficult at all to add a point size specification to the signature style.

I noticed that too and thought it was my computer... Actually it could still be my computer on top of any small bugs on VB.

My signature is the same size as the rest of the fonts. Hmm..

You can turn signatures off?!? :boobies: Never knew that.....
All the ones I see look the normal size to me. Which reminds me, I really need to either change me sig or upload a new avatar :D

Yes, it is an option in your control panel. (User CP link on the top navigation links). You can disable all images too if you like if you find the amount of smileys in posts, for example, annoying or you are on a slower dialup connection and want to streamline the download of a page.

i see everyone's sig huge too..
Just curious, for everyone who sees the signature as being large, is there a common link here maybe with a specific color style, or browser version?
What color style are you using and what browser are you using?
Ok - this is what the 'problem' is (quoteing the HTML code that generates Oatie's sig):
<!-- sig -->
<font size="2">
<div>__________________<br />
lemon mice lost or hiding in basil jungle</div></font>
<!-- / sig -->
It's worth noting that there is a CSS defined inline with the HTML. What is happening is that your browser is taking a font size of 2 to be a large font, whereas it's implicitly a smaller than normal text font. It's quite possible that it's only the prescense of the CSS that messes up the font sizeing - or it could be that the font you are using is not available in the expected set of sizes (although the browser aught to be using more sane defaults than huge).
Or, in plain english - your browser is broken. Get a new one, or update it. It's possible that the default font size is set to 1 or zero, which would make size 2 larger than normal (but not huge). The expected default font size is setting 3 [0]. I'd call that unlikely. I did see this problem myself once before (differnet board though) - I'd thoughly mangled my fonts though, and other programs were showing strange font tricks too.
Swift plug: Mozilla (in my case, 1.4) renders VB just dandy. I'll bet that those who see the problem are all using the same browser.
[0] That's not 3pt, which would be unreadable. If you can't find a setting to change that, don't worry - it's fairly esoteric.
Stuey!
Postscript: The use of font tags in this manners is deprecated. Pretty much because it allows this to happen.

It's in every color scheme. I use IE6. If i set the font back to medium, the sigs get smaller, the size of the text. But if I set it to large, nothing grows, only the sig.
Anyone who doesn't see it large, try to enlarge the default font in the browser.
Actually, I wouldn't mind if I could enlarge the font size of everything on the page. But if that's not possible, then let's have everything small, even if the default font in my browser is large :)
Oatmeal, ok... I understand what you are saying now.
As Syntax mentioned, the use of "font size=" tags is indeed depracated and replaced with a CSS element instead. Since the rest of the post is governed by a specific CSS style, and the signature is governed by a resizeable (in the IE browser), this is why you can alter the size of the text of the signature alone. CSS specifications basically render the IE option of resizing text useless.
This signature can certainly be overcome by replacing the font size= tag with a proper CSS tag to govern it's output. Just shoot Michael a PM, if you have not already and let him know he needs to create a CSS element for the signatures.

They look good to me, and I didn´t notice anything being wrong before. However, as y´all know, I´m generally Ms. Nonobservant, so it comes with the territory.

User CP ---> Options ---> Post elements ---> uncheck the "Signatures" checkbox ---> click the button Submit Modifications
Is this enough or should I get more talkative? :)
