View Full Version : What meat commercials do you hate??!!??
Meat producers/marketers seem to be very insensitve. Some of the commercials, magazine ads etc. can be scary and disturbing. What commercials really get to you?
Please tell us where the ad runs (ie where you saw it)
Maybe you have an adbusters idea you'd like to share.
Here's one that I don't like:
This one's from Canada (hey I'm from Canada too. What a coincidence.)
Maple Leaf Prime Chicken
The setting is a dog show, except there are chickens there instead of dogs. Some of the chickens are up on platforms having already been judged. One chicken runs across the floor on a leash and the commentator is making remarks about whether the judges will like this chicken. Then that same chicken is up on a pedestal and a judge is checking her out.
The judge declares that chicken the "winner". Then it goes to a Maple Leaf Prime scene and some goof says "Maple Leaf prime, we use only the best chickens".
I don't know if they ad is offensive per se, but it does get on my nerves. It runs locally, (Wollongong, Australia) and has a jingle with a very catchy tune. It gets in my head all the time,
"Meat, meat, meat, Snowy River Meat,
the meat that you deserve"
The other ad that got me was for a local man who was running for Parliment. He was a butcher, and his whole platform was. "Well, I'm your local butcher, so you must be able to trust me, right?".

There was a chicken sandwich commercial I hated. I forget what fast-food joint it was for, but the premise of the commercial was that they couldn't show breasts on television -- but they were chicken breasts. It was like they were trying to make these dead bird sandwiches seem naughty and sexy. Maybe there were live chickens in the ad, too -- sorry, I don't remember all the details. That commercial offended me on at least two levels and I wanted to mail several thousand copies of Carol Adams' The Pornography of Meat to the owners of the chain and the ad writers responsible for the commercial.
Steakhouse commercials squick me because I get a visceral reaction from seeing forks stabbing hunks of flesh on grills. In some of those ads, the way the steak moves when it's stabbed, I can almost feel the fork in my arm or leg. *is squicked even writing about it*
There is one recent commercial that did amuse me, for Quizno's subs... two guys sitting on a bench eating sandwiches. The beefy guy with a Quizno's sub (piled with meats) looks at the other guy, who is pale and nerdy and has a homemade sandwich, and says, "What, were you raised by wolves?" Then they show a shot of a mother wolf, nursing a cute wolf pup, and the camera pans up to show the nerdy guy also nursing (wearing his business suit). Then they show the nerdy guy on the bench again, and he answers the Quizno's guy, "Yes, I was!" It's weird and quirky and has totally the opposite effect on me than what Quizno's intended: I want to know what the nerdy guy is eating, and the sub sandwich has no appeal at all.
The commercial seems to have disappeared though, and I wondered if it looked to some people like the nerdy guy was *ahem* giving oral sex to the wolf (which btw is almost certainly a husky not a wolf) and so the ad was pulled. I didn't think of this till later, but I don't have a dirty mind... :o
Any commercial that shows the animal the meat is made from and it is happy.
All meat commercials, especially any commercial purporting the necessity or inherent positivity of meat or criticizing those that don't eat it, overtly or indirectly.
Also- any of the ads by Chili's because they have such catchy songs.

There was a Burger King (I think it was BK) one on recently that had some people "oinking" and "clucking" like pigs and chickens, respectively.
Then it showed a chicken and bacon burger with the voice over saying something like "only accept the real thing".
Something like that.
There is one good one that I saw. It was about these guys who were fishing and they caught a fish. But then as the fish was lying on the ground, gasping for water, the way the water was dripping of the fish it looked like tears. So they released the fish into the water again. I'm not sure what the commercial was for but that part was supposed to be about the tough guy having a soft spot.

MacDonalds.
How I loathe MacDonalds and everything it stands for. I hate it's adverts aimed at kiddies, it's adverts aimed at teenagers and any other group they try to seduce with sickening food.
I'm in the UK and there are always loads on during Saturday mornings (ITV, I think)... then saturday evenings.... then quite a lot of times during the week. It's offensive simply because it's MacDonalds. I hate this new "I'm lovin' it" catchphrase. They only just got rid of "Things that make you go MMMMMMM" and it makes them look so desperate now that they've changed it again.
I think the most disturbing thing about the new adverts (the ones aimed a little kids) is when you can hear the kids say "I'm lovin' it". It just sounds wrong
the "i'm lovin it" campaign turned my family into a laughing house. It came on whilst we were watching TV, and it has this black dude with an afro buy a cheeseburger and go to a really expensive club. The advert pretty much sailed over ourheads, but it was trying to market their cheeseburgers as cheap, and try to give it the integrity associated with the new expensive "bling" fad that we're going through.
But to be honest, as of lately, I've been hitting the mute button when the adverts come on. I find that it helps a lot. Give it a go.

There's a Perdue chicken commercial that really gets me. The owner is talking about his obsession with making "meatier" chickens and shows this chickens lifting weights, studying, ect. I just find it really disturbing.
This one isn't for flesh food but dairy products. It is the "happy cows" campaign. I think it is only on radio (or I maybe I just don't watch enough TV?) but it features two happy, content and gossipy California milk cows waxing on about how pleasant life is for California dairy cows and why people should only by California dairy products because no other cows could be this happy.

I hated this commercial at first, but then it became so ironic, it was hilarious.
"McDonald's is proud to use Alberta beef. Here in Alberta we grow the finest beef in the country."
During it's run, there was the single cow BSE scare in Alberta... haven't seen it since!

there's a billboard somewhere in Seattle that says "The World is My Porkchop...Pork, the other white meat." I just think of cute little piggies being ''turned into'' porkchops...

Quizno's!! God that wolf sucking one is annoying not to mention kind of gross. One good thing did come of it though. :shifty: A couple of friends of mine were watching TV and had just finished commenting on my veganism. Payback time! That commercial came on and they all started commenting saying things like "Eww drinking wolf milk is nasty," and one even said "Yuck drinking milk from an animal?! How can anyone do that?" I turned to her and said "You drink cow milk, don't you?" That shut her up. No offense to any octo-lavo ppl. I only remarked that to her because she was making such a big deal about my veganism before that...
And yes, those McDonalds commercials are evil. EVIL! :whack: Take that you evil clown!

I loathe those 'Hungry Man' frozen dinner commercials. :furious:
Basically, they're saying unless you eat half a pound of processed chicken strips (chock full of beaks, feet, and who knows what else) you're not a 'real man'.
--There's an ad showing Frank Perdue gazing at a roasting turkey carcass with an expression that could only be described as lust.
--A Reynold's Wrap ad showing a woman awaking from a nightmare about a giant, thrashing plucked/beheaded chicken "stuck to the pan". Latent omni guilt?
--The meat company ad in which a woman says in a voiceover, "A meal just isn't a meal without meat!"
Those Foster chickens are irritating.
It does seem weird that drinking milk on any animal is weird, unless it's a cow.
I still eat dairy products and I find the whole idea of milk very weird.

I've got a few ads I hate.
The first one has this kid who's getting coached for some football game and the coach is at every meal telling him to eat his meat and such and at the end the ad has this catchy "we love to boogy" song. The people who made it made another one of these old people at a concert everyone was cheering them because they were like wearing wigs and looked young and then they went back stage and they were all young and it was like saying RED meat makes you healthy and live longer - Australia is not only the worlds 3rd FATEST country its all the worlds DUMBEST country :P
Theres this one advertising tuna and it has this tuna running along saying hi to all the people like its like doing its daily run and its beating everyone and then I think it goes like 97% fat free or something.
Oh and any McDonalds ad is just plain evil I mean they have Justin Timberlake on them which makes them even more sh*t and evil and stupid.

I haven't seen this one for a while, but it was the Applebee's ad where they were singing "Gimme steak, lots of steak, lots of tender juicy steak...at Applebee's" to the tune of "Don't fence me in."
I absolute abhor the Lobsterfest ads for Red Lobster, particularly the one with a lobster running across the ocean floor with "Nowher to Run" playing.
...and the hardest thing is to write a commercial for a steak house. Oh well, I'm just a glorified liar I guess. Good thing I don't have to write too many of them.
The "I'm Lovin' it" McDonalds campaign has got to be the dumbest campaign ever to hit the airwaves. Even my 10 year old daughter told me the other night...."what the heck are they trying to say, Mummy?"

..snip..

Is that the one that says he eats, drinks, sleeps, and lives chicken, or whatever? I hate that one. And the last one, too. I always say, "oh, really?"
Saw a got milk? ad last night with it's claim that milk is good for strong bones...
