I wanted to make a casserole that calls for turkey meat that I always made as a leftover dish when I was an omni like, 4 years ago. I just need to know, is this stuff ANY good at all? What is the texture/taste like?

I have my first one in the oven. I'll tell you in about 2 hours :) As I am the anti-soy :notvegan: , if I like it, anyone will.

I don't like tofurkey, but I do like Unturkey (by Now and Zen) :)

Okay, fake bird out of the oven.
I give it a B. It doesn't taste like "turkey" or "tofu", but it does have white meat inspiration. It stands up on its own with a bit of gravy, so would be fine in leftover casseroles.

I didn't hate either Tofurky or Unturkey.... didn't absolutely love them, either. I think blending Tofurkey with other flavors, as in a casserole, would improve it quite a bit. Give it a try and let us know! :lick:

Ok, the casserole is a gross little thing. When I was about 8, I got this great idea to take green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, cranberries, turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing and layer it in a pan like lasagna, then bake it with crumbled up rolls on top. Then, after it all bakes and gets hot and melted together, I smothered it in gravy and ate it. Yeah, sick, isn't it? But I made it year after year, and eventually "thanksgiving slop pie" as I called it...it became a family hit, what can I say? And thanksgiving is just not the same without it.....
Yeah you guys probably think I am the grossest damn person in the world. Anyway, I am glad the tofurkey is pretty good. I need to figure out where I can get one.

*rotfl* That does sound... interesting... actually it sounds pretty good except for the cranberries! I think Tofurkey comes with a little pot of gravy, too...

Tofurkey tastes like turkey only more chewy. Good stuff. :lick:

that sounds good actually
its how thanksgiving dinner ends up in your stomach anyway
i personally only like to mix together green beans, stuffing, candied sweet potatoes (with extra candied sauce), and mashed potatoes... and cover it all in thick brown gravy
i used to make a similar dish of fake ham, mashed potatoes, peas and corn... and i just used the fake deli slices..
i didnt seperate them, i just chopped them into cubes
you could do the same with the tofurkey slices or the other brands deli slices
itd probably be cheaper that way too

Martha Stewart has a "leftover pie" recipe in the newest issue of "Living" which sounds very similar to what you make.

I am addicted to Tofurkey hickory smoked slices!
I just bought a package yesterday and it's gone already.
They are really good heated in gravy and serves on bread with mashed taters! :lick: Ummmy! I definately would use the slices over the roast for a casserole.

I'll have to try Unturkey. I like Tofurkey, but Mrs. MV doesn't think it is that good. Maybe she'll like Unturkey. The other thing we could do is add gravy - Mrs. MV might like it better with vegan gravy.

borealis - Oh no, its the cranberries that make it yummy!! lol.....see, Martha knows whats up....;)
I gotta find some of this tofurky stuff.
It may just be me, but I eat cranberry sauce plain and only plain.

I think the tofurky will add no flavor to the casserole, just texture. Heck, I'd just skip it. The rest sounds so good anyway...
Mm. I might make me some. :)

that is an idea, Charity, I could just make it without the turkey...I haven't even attempted it, but this Thanksgiving my parents are actually volunteering to vegan-ize most of the Thanksgiving food for me- at least to set some aside. Isn't that nice?
