View Full Version : Question for Veg*ns Who Like Weapons
OK, forgive me for this bizarre question, but I am curious. I noticed on some of the other boards here that some veg*ans are supportive of owning guns and keep them themselves.
I was just curious to know how one would reconcile that the sale of guns, archery equipment, and bullets includes an excise tax that supports hunting programs. If you disagree with hunting, do you feel it is still OK to buy archery equipment and guns? Why or why not?
Disclaimer: I do not own guns or archery equipment, nor do I plan to purchase any. Nor am I involved in either side of the debate on weapons--it's not really my issue. The purpose of this thread is not to start another gun control debate or hunting argument.
Basically I am just curious how veg*ans and people who already disagree with hunting feel about purchasing weapons and ammunition.

Peace, I'm the wrong person to answer this question as I am diet restricted for health reasons and harbor no philosophical objection to eating meat. I also don't object to hunting if it's done so for food and not for just a mount or the "thrill" of the kill, if you will.
For those that wish to be able to protect themselves and their families with a firearm but object to the use of the excise tax and are uncomfortable paying it for that reason, I would just suggest that they consider purchasing a used weapon, or ammo at flea markets, yard sales, etc. as the tax will have already been paid long ago and by another person.
While I cannot speak for anyone else, two things immediately come to mind.
1. Guns are NOT only used for hunting. There is protection of family and property and also people actively shoot for fun. There is a skill, not unlike billiards, darts, bowling or any other pasttime, to becoming a good shot.
2. Not all veg*ns are opposed to hunting.

If I wasn't such a wimp about handling a gun I would have one in my home for protection in my ghetto of a neighborhood. But alas, I don't have a gun so keep the 9 iron and my trustee bat at hand for thugs who may feel the need to cross into my territory. :)

Firearms and archery equipment are everyones right (in the USA) to own, posess and use;furthermore, not all firearms and archery equipiment sold are used for hunting. One of the fastest growning in the USA is sportingclays, a sport which does have roots with hunters, but is non violent.
Secondly those taxes on the equipment do nt go out just for the sole support of hunting groups. A vast majiority of the tax goes toward habitate restoration, protection and aqusistion. So a better question would be how can individuals so concerned about wild life, contribute the least to the total well being. yes hunters hunt the habitat, adn bird watchers watch the birds, hikers hike it, foresrty classes learn and observity and so do countless other groups.
I agree with whole, I support Pheasant Forever, the national wild turkey federation, the NRA, Quail Unlimited, Bird dogs Forever, the Rocky mountian elk foundation, girls and boys clubs, make a wish, hunt of a life time, Ohio state troopers, Shrine childrens Hospitals, Masonic 33 degree reading labs, and Ted Nugent camps for kids. Some of do, and do with outin order to support others and what is for the better good of all. If you arent giving to promot a cause of what is right, then you are causing it to fail.
Lastly Firearms are also for home/personal defense i support CCW.

KC, actually it's being held up in court at the moment, though I doubt it will be delayed for long. Sorry to disappoint you . . . :D
I currently don't own any weapons, but I have been into archery in the past. I saw it as a hobby rather than anything else & the only thing I did was practice my aim with a few hay bales & a target.
I wouldn't mind doing the same with a gun at a shooting range. I would never want to use a weapon to do harm to anyone or anything (except a paper target :) ). However, whips & pleather straps are another story.... ;)
Any one have links on the sport of clay shooting, or whatever American called it? My brother loves hunting. I'd love to divert his attention to skeet or whatever while he's still young!

I like bows and arrows (don't have any though), although the only archery I was ever into was what we did in a mediaevil re-enactment society (I've been a target of archers; although the arrows we used were blunt and we had armour and shields).
My favourite weapons to use were the rapier and dagger (heh, I got stabbed in the gut by one once because I was too lazy to wear armour).

Epski, here's a link to the Amateur Trapshooting Society (ATA) which is the managing organization for trapshooting in the US.

Also, here's a link to a page which connects both the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) and the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA).

Just please don't look up my recent averages; I've been drinking too much for my own good . . . . :D

The national rifle association could tell you where the nearest skeet club is. They support that also.

Well, in the US, you do not HAVE to walk around with a gun... but at least they have the RIGHT to protect themselves from harm. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for Canada.
I think we should have a right to protect ourselves, family and property from any scumbag. As it is now, we're limited to protecting our homes/families with shotguns and rifles only ON the premises, but not allowed to carry personal protection. Of course, the criminals can carry whatever weapon they like, whenever and wherever they like. Meanwhile the rest of us have to rely on calling the police after the fact and hope they catch the lowlife.
Until the police and gov't can guarantee the safety of it's citizens from armed attacks by criminals, you can bet this is one Canadian who is strongly in favor of one's right to protect his/herself, family, and property from criminals.
