I'm sure this has been out for a long time, but I never bothered to look at it, assuming it was full of gelatin. But today, the large word Gel caught my eye. I checked the ingredients...and its totally vegan. It even says Contains no animal product right on it. Score! I bet they have these in almost every grocery store...vegan jello for all! I tried the Pineapple in Lime Gel...it was great.

Ingredients: Water, Pineapple, Sugar, Carrageenan, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Adipic Acid, Sodium Citrate, Fumaric Acid, Potassium Citrate, Locust Bean Gum, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), FD&C Yellow #5, and FD&C Blue #1.

I didn't know that, either. I think Dole is a lot better with the fruit products than Del Monte, too, for anybody who's interested :)

are the natural flavors vegan?

scareyvegan:

I would assume so, since they made a point of saying that it contains no animal products, which I believe would include the sources of natural flavors.

Hey, cool. I haven't had Jello for a long time. I was never a big fan before, but it's amazing how you begin to crave what you can't have. I've never seen these things around before, where'd you pick them up?

Good ol' auntie Jewel. I'll have to take a look for those next time. The fruits don't get all mushy and gross though, do they? I'm really more interested in the Jello.

I remember eating those back before I went vegetarian (back in January or February) and liking them, but I haven't had them since out of fear of gelatin..I'll have to check them out next time we're at the store, if the same holds true for the ones they sell at our store, I'll be a very happy girl.

i just worry because i thought gelatin is considered parve which means its neither meat nor dairy

so whos to say that natural flavors can be considered to be without animal products when they really are?

wow, i guess i always *assumed* they weren't vegan, or maybe there's another brand that i checked... but that's really nice to know.
also, the kool aid gels are vegan too. but no fruit, just tons of sugar. :D

I bought some and they are pretty good...Kind of makes you suspicious of them! But I like them, although the fruit was a teeny bit mushy and the lime
flavor is very dominate vs. the pineapple flavor...Cures the jello craving tho...

hey, i finally looked at these again last night and the only ones i found had cochineal listed. :(
that's so annoying... grrr.
guess i'll just have to go for the lime if i ever really want to try them, but, eh... i don't like lime that much. oh well.

ech! Conchineal.
I'm not a stickler for trace ingredients, but this is one that I stay clear of (nothing like insects in your Jel to liven things up.....yech)

forgive my possible ignorance here, but doesn't the ingredient 'sugar' raise some possible vegan/non-vegan issues here? I would assume that they are using the cheap white sugar, whitened with animal bones. I always thought that the companies that make sure to veganize their products specifically use evaporated cane juice or something similar to be sure not to use plan 'sugar.'

Is it that most people don't worry too much about the presence of sugar in otherwise vegan items? Or is the animal bones-for-whitening thing no longer common in the production of sugar? Again, I'm not looking to preach or pick a fight here - I'm sincerely curious.

DCveg,

I was thinking the same thing. I dont eat anything that list "sugar" as an ingredient unless it specifically says "vegan" on it.

Parve means that it is neither beef nor cow-dairy, but can mean fish. Some gelatin comes from fish, but when I worked at a food supplier (we made natural flavors, cultures for cheese, yogurt, and spice mixes) I was told by a Food Scientist (she had a Masters in Food Science) that Kosher Gelatin almost always comes from algae.

Gelatin is so confusing because it can come from so many different things!
