So, my family is big time Italian...when my sisters and I say we're vegetarians its just like My Big Fat Greek Wedding when the Aunt says, "ok I'll make lamb!"

Anyways, there is the feast of the seven fish on Xmas Eve. My mom has always incorporated lots of veggies (tempura style b/c everything is fried...oh so healthy) My question is...what can I use to fry the veggies besides egg and flour???

The Egg replacement is a powder right?
I'm new to this and I want to be well prepared for the holidays

Thanks!
Angela

What dish exactly are you trying to replicate?

No, tempura batter is not made with eggs.

Mix this just as you are about to cook. Sift 85g/3oz plain flour and 1 tbsp cornflour with 1/2 tsp fine sea salt into a large mixing bowl. Whisk in 200ml/7fl oz ice-cold sparkling mineral water along with a few ice cubes using a whisk, but don't over beat. It doesn't matter about a few lumps. Use immediately.

I've never heard of tempura being served as a part of an Italian Christmas meal. Whats the Italian name for this dish?

Its not tempura...I said that to make ppl understand they are fried with a batter not just fried in oil. They are dipped in egg, then in flour and fried.

I guess I just made it more confusing!

ha ha. I'm easliy confused :D

Here's an idea: if you put your entire desired Christmas menu here we can all help you vegetarian/veganize it.

My Italian in-laws do the fish thing on Christmas Eve also. They used to do the fried veg thing also until I took over that part of dinner (as well as the appetizers, the pasta and the salads and the desserts). Mr. Falafel is right. If you must have fried veg and want to prepare it tempura style, you don't use egg in the batter. I'd be interested in seeing your typical holiday menu so we could suggest some other alterations to make it a more veggie friendly gathering for you and your sisters.
