Hello, this is my first post. I have been vegan since March 2009, best decision I have ever made. Sorry if this has been asked a million times before but what are the best vegan vitamins, and where can I buy them?

Thanks in advance !

-Steph :)

I don't know if these are "best", but here are a couple choices:
GNC Ultra Mega I just priced these and they are $17.99 for 90 vitamins.
VegLife Vegan One Multiple available at health food stores for about $13.00 for 30.

I prefer the Deva brand of vegan vitamins. They have them at health food stores and online (veganessentials.com).

oooo....I like those prices. I was in a healthfood store today and asked what they had. The brands they carried were running $40 for 30. All I could think was that if that's how much vegan vitamins ran I was going to have to stick with non-vegan. Some things just aren't in my budget.

My brother is a manager at GNC so he can get me awesome discounts on vitamins.

are they those vitamins that look like horse pills. I have trouble swallowing the big ones. Reminds me of kids I used to hang out in high school. They used to take a bunch of pharmaceuticals to get high off of. I had some pretty lame friends.

I buy a multi from Whole Foods. I don't remember the exact price, but it's under $20 for a bottle of 180.

I also consider the fortified soy milk I drink daily to be a form of vitamin/mineral supplement, since it has so much stuff in it, including the typical B12, omega-3, zinc, vitamin D, etc that veg*ns sometimes don't get in large enough quantities. Because I drink that daily, and eat a decent amount of fruits and veggies, I really don't feel like the multi-vitamin pills are necessary, but I still try to take them a few times per week, just as a safety net.

Wait, what's the difference between vegan vitamins and other vitamins? Right now I don't take a multi-vitamin, I take a bunch of separate ones...

A lot of vitamins have ingredients derived from animal sources. Sometimes, it's something more obvious like gelatin or fish oil and other times it's something you'd have to know to look for like vitamin D3 (which often comes from lanolin, an animal product).

I'm not vegan, but I'm taking vegan pre-natal vitamins (due to breastfeeding). I found mine at Target. The brand is Rainbow Light. They have both Vegan and non-Vegan so you have to read the label. You can view them at Target.com (http://www.target.com/s/182-7861877-2761746?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=rainbow%20light%20vitamins&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx%5F1%5F1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1&searchRank=target104545). The vegan vitamins are labeled with the word "VeganGuard" on the back. To view to label, just click on the vitamin images and zoom in.

I don't really know the difference in vitamins-haven't had to look, but I suspect many have animal produced ingrediants, or tested on animals. I've seen red pills I would suspect have carmine beetle stuff in them. Then there's geletin capsules.

I've been using Alive! multivitamin shake from Natures Way. It's labeled vegetarian, but I can't see anything about it that wouldn't be vegan. I use 1/2 the recommended scoop with OJ in the morning, and found how much it helps me after not having it for the last month.

People don't readily absorb most of the B12 in pill form, so I'm guessing that's why it contains such a huge amount. Your body is only taking in a small portion.

I pretty much have to buy my multi at Whole Foods. Looking at the local supermarket vitamin aisle and the drug stores near me, I couldn't find a single vitamin that didn't have gelatin! And I'm not just talking capsules - the pills have it, too.

It's 365 Brand (Whole Foods' house brand) "Adult Multi". Yes, the name's that generic. They have a few of them - specialized for men, for women, with or without iron, etc. The most generic one is the cheapest, I think, and it's one per day, so the bottle of 180 for under $20 really does last half a year. Actually, with as often as I forget to take them, they last over a year. But they're only meant as a backup in case I'm not eating healthy enough that week, anyway - usually, I think my food gives me enough of everything.

If I can find this next time I'm there, it looks like I'll be trading in my many-vitamins for one... have to look into that, I hate taking a bunch of different pills every morning, ick.

EDIT: Question, does anyone else take additional vitamins with their multi one? Like calcium or iron etc? I don't seem to know much about vitamins and when to take them or what to look for in one or anything haa

I'm no expert either. There are a couple of nutrients that I know veg*ns need to worry about (B12, iron, zinc), so I checked to make sure my multi includes those. Actually, it's possible to have too much iron, so they have multis both with or without iron, so decide based on what you think you need. My iron level was actually high the last time I donated blood, so I take with the multi without iron for now.
