I haven't ran in over year, yet for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to sign up for a 10k on 25th October. I've got some serious training to do, so having somewhere public to track my progress will be great motivation. I still need to hit the gym to see how far I can run in one go right now, probably not very far. So that's the plan for today, to see just how much work I've got to do.

Otherwise, I hope to:
- go to the gym at least 3 times a week
- swim at least once a week
- walk 8 miles once a week.

If I get some cash together, I'm also hoping to start a belly dancing class near the end of the month. And I've got to STRETCH and do some weights, I never remember to do either of these things but I realise they're important.

I hope to finish the 10k in less than 1hr10mins, which isn't a particularly impressive time but I'll be pleased if I manage it. I'd also like to run the whole course, no walking for me!

Anyone else who has any fitness goals, please feel free to join me in this thread! :)

Terrible start but I don't see myself making it to the gym today. Training on hold until Monday. It's better to start these things on a Monday anyway...sure sure...

You should try to get a running buddy. It can help.

Thanks for the advice :) i've tried it before, I prefer to do these things on my own. I just need to do it that first time, then I'm away...

[peer pressure]In that case put on your runners and go run 2 miles! [/peer pressure]

I'm actually similar. I prefer running alone. I do have one question though. Why the gym? I find it much easier to run outside then on a treadmill. You don't have to drive to the gym, you can just go out and do it.

A few reasons, I've just found I'm more comfortable running at the gym, I'm less self conscious. I get bored quickly too so I can mix it up a bit and use some other machines, I'm a bit fan of the benefits of cross training too. I'm lucky in that one of my gyms (all under the same membership) is just around the corner from my house, another is just 1.5 miles away so walking there is a nice warm up, walking home a nice warm down.

It's interesting how different people find different things better for running, I know some people can't bear a treadmill and love running outdoors. Maybe it's just because I'm such a slow runner, I get frustrated if I don't get anywhere very fast!

That's cool. I'm an outdoors runner. I've run a few times on a treadmill but prefer my scenery to move. I have to admit that watching Rocky and Bullwinkle while running on a treadmill was a lot of fun though.

Best of luck on Monday :)

Thank you! :) I'm off to support a friend in a 5k tomorrow, so that should be excellent motivation.

Do you run in the mornings?

I find that if I just put on my sneakers and go as soon as I get out of bed, then before I know it, I'm three miles into my run, the end is in sight, and I have coffee and the newspaper to look forward to! :)

Okay, so our local newspaper is really a huge piece of right-wing garbage, but you get the idea...

Make sure you don't over-do it and injure yourself!

I actually made it to the gym today! This is good, I am pleased because I've been a member for longer than I care to admit and I've never actually been save for a couple of swims. My running was disasterous though, far worse than I thought it would be, almost as bad as when I first started running 7 years ago. I was hoping I'd have some residual fitness from June (when I was walking 14-26 miles everyday), but I guess I might have stamina to plod for a long time, just not the energy to keep in a run.

I'm just glad I found out now how much work I've got to do rather than a week before the race. I sure am going to ache tomorrow!

Today:
20 mins on treadmill, run/walk, covered 2.5km (yup...a lot of work to do...)
20 mins on seated bike
20 reps on leg pushy thing, 30kg
10 mins on crosstrainer

So once I was off the treadmill, things weren't so bad, my legs were really feeling it the last 5 mins on the bike though.

Hum, I'm disappointed I'm so out of shape, but I guess it just makes it more of a challenge and will make it all the more satisfying if I manage it!

Ooh, me thighs, I can feel it today. I didn't make it to the gym today so I think tomorrow will be walking (8-11 miles) and swim, then gym again Thursday and Friday.

Didn't make it out of the house yesterday...grr...

Today the gym:
- 1 minute walking, 4 minutes running for 11 mins, 2.5km
- 20 mins on seated bike
- 10 mins on cross trainer

I'm not sure I'm to manage this in 6 weeks, but I'm still going to go for it. If I haven't managed it by then, I'll just give myself more time and do a later race.

Short sesh at the gym today since my uterus is trying to bust its way out of my belly alien stylee:

- walk 2 minutes, run 5 minutes for 15 minutes (that doesn't add up hmm...), 2km

- 10 minutes on seated bike

Collapse.

One thing I've found weird today and on Saturday is that the machines are saying my blood pressure is around 70-80bpm. Last week when I first went, it was 150-180bpm, which is high but has always been about normal for me. If it was just one machine, I'd assume it was just wrong, but it's strange that they're all reporting about the same thing. Maybe I'm just sweatier and it's not reading right :p

Just walked 8 miles, may go for a swim later if I have time and don't ache too much from yesterday.

Misread the pool timetable so swam today instead. 20 lengths (0.5km), should have done 40 but my brain wasn't in it and I got bored.

- Seated bike, 20 mins

Gym:

- treadmill, walk 2 mins, run 20 mins, walk 2 min, 3.4km
- seated bike, 20 mins

Feeling a bit more optimistic about this. It's 5 weeks away, so if I add about a mile a week, I should be able to just about do it. *fingers crossed*
