LJ National Protest Day (http://www.fragile-wings.net/npd/)

Many Livejournal users are placing one of these graphics in their journals to show their support for the right of all American citizens to marry, regardless of gender.

I've placed this in the Compost Heap because I know it's sometimes considered to be a controversial issue, but it is not my intent that this issue be debated in this thread. This is simply to provide information to any interested parties.

i'm confused. are we supposed to not update our LJs on the 15th as part of this? or just post the graphic on our LJs?

As far as I'm able to understand, they're just asking everyone to post one of the graphics to your LJ at some point during the day. I've already put mine on, and I made the entry public. (My journal is normally Friends Only).

The way it looks to me, people of any gender already do have the right to marry anyone they want. What people don't have is recognition of same-sex by most official goverment agencies, as being equivalent to different-sex marriage, for purposes of special priveleges or licenses, afforded to them. For example people in same-sex marriages aren't recognized as married in terms of the Internal Revenus Service definiton of marriage, and thus don't have recognition of their claims tax priveleges afforded to the married. They have to pay the same taxes as single folk.

If same sex marriage were made legal -- edited to read: if same-sex marriages were recognized by government agencies -- what would prevent 2 people of the same sex from getting married just for the purpose of getting a tax break? How would we make sure they really kissed and hugged each other, huh?

Um, I've never had to prove kissin and huggin in my heterosexual relationship, why should same-sex couples have an additional burden of proof?

Gosh Soilman, I hope that was sarcasm. Yeah, being in a long term relationship is "just like married", except for benefits, perks & personal fulfillment. You can be together for years, but it's still considered superior to family when a heterosexual couple announces they're getting married after just a few months together! Wow, that's a "real couple" in the eyes of conservatives. It's programmed in our minds that marriage is serious.. everything else is just beating around the bush (even with the divorce rate).

For example purposes:

Straight couple: We're getting married next year!

Same-sex couple: Oh, wow, that's great. I hope you two are as happy as we are.

Straight couple: Um, yeah. Well, you're not really married.

Same-sex couple: We might as well be, it's not our fault it's illegal in the US.

Straight couple: OK, I guess that's true. But this is the real deal, we're so excited!

And then the average family embraces the new heterosexual married couple into the loop, and the same-sex couple is still seen as fleeting no matter how long they've been together, because it makes a lot of people uncomfortable AND because it's not legally recognized. So long as you don't care what anyone else thinks, it is the same. Just like being veg*n is equally accepted & easy as being omni.

I'm not an LJ user, but I support the action.

Your mind maybe; there is no such program in my mind.

I don't understand what you are trying to communicate in the rest of your message.

And again, same-sex marriage is not illegal in most places in the US, it just doesn't qualify anyone for special priveleges, the way dif-sex marriage does.

I have no problems with homosexuality or same sex maragie (even though the bible calls it many things, it is a book of a by gone age) the gay comunity has every right to partner and suffer the maraige tax.
I do have gay friends not many less than the fingers on one hand infact, men and women..two coupels. I dont agree however with these couples adopting children, as a gay, you can not reproduce naturally with your partner (all the two much of one set of parts) therefore adoption is should nt be avail, am I saying hetros make better parents..you betcha...we are because we can, and that is where I draw the line. :beatnik:

If you cannot reproduce naturally is the criteria, then "straight" people who can't get a child themselves shouldn't be able to adopt either ?

I often see "straight" "parents" that shouldn't been allowed to have kids.

I'd prefer a same sex set of parents above a set of malfunctioning "straight" parents.

My bf's brother and sister-in-law got married for cheaper car insurance rates. There's nothing stopping 2 people of different sex from getting married for the tax break, either, and yet that's recognized by the government.

Hey I support the maraige, gay 99% of gay rights, but not kids. never no how no way...further I do not believe that couples who can not conciev should use drugs to concieve. Being a kid is hard enough emotionally but to have same parents would only serve to multiple this hard time, its not right, and goes aginst the childs rights.

May be you should adopt gay parents then....that makes sense to me more so thans gays adopting kids. maybe a program like big brothers and sisters for gay youths...that I would support

<moderator hat on>

if you wish to debate adoption for same sex couples, please either start a new thread or do a search for the old one that took place here this year. this topic is about supporting government-sanctioned marriage for same sex couples.

thank you.
