View Full Version : Making myself a yoga/meditation room!

Just got into yoga this year and I thought I would convert a room downstairs to a yoga/meditation room. I can also do pilates and weights in here, I think I'll keep my treadmill and skier in the rec room to keep it more of a stress-free zone.

So far I've picked the room to be my future zen room. It's currently a carpenter's hobby room from the previous owner. It's about 15x20 feet. I'm going to rip out those hobby shelves, repaint the room to a relaxing color or colors. I'll put down tiling or rubber interlocking mats for the flooring. I'll put up an entire wall as a mirror. I'll put a bar and strap on another wall. I'll setup a TV/DVD/VCR to watch any yoga/pilates videos, and a sound system if I want relaxing music, or workout music while I lift. I might get a yoga chair. And of course my exercise ball and any other props. I'll install some dimmable lighting and candles. It'll be my own private little space.

Any other ideas I might be missing? Can't wait to start! :hamster:

Gaiam has some really nice stuff for rooms like the one you're describing. Very zen! :tired:

Check it out:

(let me know if the link doesn't work)

Well, with all that stuff in it - might be hard to call it a ZEN room :p

I have a meditation room for meditation, yoga, "thinking", and hiding from my daughter. Once my digital camera gets here I'll try and post a few pics.

I get my stuff from antique bazaars mostly. You can find some great stuff on ebay if you use the right key words.

You could install Tatami floor - though I don't know how much it costs in the United States. Since living here - I am dependent on tatami for a nap. I love the smell and texture.

What about temple bells (like wind chimes - hung from the ceiling).

i would get some sort of cabinet system to keep all of your props in--as well as one for the TV, etc.

i have a yoga/meditation room that is completely empty except for the narrow table that i use as a sort of "altar table" in the room. I have altars in every room, except my bedroom, because i'm working on redoing that room now.

anyway, i have an interlocking laminate floor, cool pale blue walls, and the table. The room has a closet, and in there i have shelves for props as well. otherwise it is empty.

it is a lovely room, and about 6 people can practice in there together. :) i find that having it completely empty, with good storage for all of my yoga stuff (which isn't very much, btw), is very restful for meditation, yoga, or just being quiet.

Well so far my husband is keen on the idea, he believes yoga and pilates are very beneficial to do, he might even join in!

We decided on a natural bamboo floor. I like the look, and it's environmentally friendly as it's a very renewable resource.

We picked out a light sage green color for the walls, but our second choice is a pale blue. Today I talk to my yoga teacher to ask her how I get a floor to ceiling mirror on one wall (like hers).

I do plan to get an entertainment stand to hold the TV, DVD/VCR/CD, and videos, as well as a small sound surround system. As for clutter, I don't mind an excercise room and a few blocks against the wall. I plan to get a rice paper floor lamp, and maybe a few sconces on the walls.

I'll get a Meditation chair (http://www.zenbydesign.com/chairs/zen.htm), and a short table for candles and such. Maybe I'll have a wall fountain for added ambience. And of course a small bookcase to house all my yoga and pilates books.

The only other thing I might put in here is a weight bench, and I can hide that behind a shoji screen. It should be spacious even for my husband and I, plus our future family of 2-3 kids!

As for other decor, once I'm done I'll be able to visualize what other things the room might need. I doubt I'll use bell chimes, it's in the basement and won't get a breeze. I'll be looking through my yoga magazines for ideas in the meantime.

I should have my room ready by the end of the month, my whole family is going to come and help install the flooring and paint! I'll post a picture when it's done.
