Considering that ecstacy is hardly a vegetarian item I'm feeling like this might be a shot in the dark. j/k

At age 29 I've just come to accept that this is a part of my life that's always gonna be with me in some way. I always thought when I was younger doing this how long I could possibly do it for. It's an exhausting lifestyle, that's for sure. A show in April I ended up taking a nap in VIP because I was scheduled to play at 6 freaking AM. Where else would somebody be booked to perform at that kind of hour?

Though I am a DJ now and that's the main reason I'm still involved, there's still nothing more awesome to me than joining in with a packed dancefloor with 500-1000 people just dancing their brains out without a care in the world until times most people usually wake up at.

Though I have a musical background and love my classic assorted pop-progrock-etc. from the 60's, 70s, 80's and 90's , electronic music will always hold a very special place in my heart.

When I left the house when I was 16 for a "church lock in" and went to my first rave I felt like it was my calling to be involved with this scene somehow. All these years later, you'd think this music would get tiring. It DOESN'T! There's always great new music coming out and a healthy enough support of the core 2-300 regulars in the Pittsburgh area that are out at every one to keep it going.

There's nothing more exciting to me than getting to mix records for a packed room full of people rocking out. No high in the world can touch it when you're having a really good night and I get to do it fairly regularly which I feel blessed for.

Ravers are an extremely liberal group too in just about every aspect and not surprisingly I've met a lot of veg and even vegan ravers in our scene so it's been a great place to not feel alone when I made the transition to vegetarian then vegan last year. Though this group does have a reputation for partying as hard as possible not everybody's like that.

For example - last year the 4th of July party we had a cookout prior to the show on the patio of the venue (jokes about eating rolls and beans abound haha) and some friends brought a bunch of snacks, homemade salsas, marinaded portabellas for burgers - it's great! And it's been fun the occasions at house parties where I'd bring a pasta salad or something and people would tear it right up.

How this music never fails to make me move either is beyond me. It's been really fun watching the evolution of electronic music over the years, and catching up on all the new sounds after I took a few years away from it.

Plus, how awesome is it that I have this GIGANTIC group of extended friends to go to on the weekend? I have way over 1000 myspace friends and can honestly say I've met most of them and a good chunk of them I see pretty regularly.

Any fans of this kinda stuff feel free to write what you like about it, and of course if you'd like some mixes I can direct you to my DJ page. :-D

I like electronic music, turntablism, and DJ-ing, but I have never been to a rave. You don't need e to appreciate it either.

I don't know what the terms are, but I like music with a lot of sounds to it. God Lives Underwater, ColdCut... that sort of stuff. I found it by accident and want to hear more, but I don't know names or what's good or... anything.

I've never been to a rave in my life... mostly because I have heard the stories and mostly because I don't think ravers would want an "old person" in their midst (I'm closer to 50 than I am to 20  ).

So yea, that's me - the uneducated armchair passive fan... :dunce:

I've been in love with the Electronic music scene for over 10 years.

My mom was actually the one who first suggested I check out a rave when I was about 16, because a bunch of my cousins in the UK had been enjoying these crazy all night dance parties.

The city I grew up in didn't have much else going on, so the rave scene took off in the late 90's. It was a wonderful time to be partying in that city. It was all about the PLUR (peace love unity & respect). The parties were on the small side, 500 people was a big one, so there was a real sense of community. I started throwing parties and promoting with a group of friends for a couple years and it was amazing in every way.

A few years later I moved to a bigger city and didn't really enjoy the rave scene there. Too many people, gangs and hard drugs (I'd way rather be somewhere with people on E, acid and mushrooms than all methed or coked out). I kinda of fell away from the scene for awhile, but I still kept listening to the music & dancing at clubs, but have just gotten back into it, after going to an amazing festival called Shambhala in BC for the first time last year.

The festival rekindled my love affair with dancing, and changed my life in so many ways (including meeting the love of my life, and so many amazing people).

I'm actually on my way out the door now to go listen to my roommate spin at a club and then we'll head to the afterhours club to dance till the early hours of the morning.

The dancing makes my soul soar... It's my church, my way of worshiping the universe, dancing-to the throbbing bass and intricate rythyms, with throngs of people. It's tribal. It's primal. It's a way of life.

4evergrounded- There are lots of older people at raves and especially outdoor music festivals. I went with some people who were in their 40's. Age is irrelevant, as long as you are there to enjoy yourself, be open minded and have fun.

Ericbliss- what kind of music do you spin?

Wait...what? It is vegetarian though right?

I'll dance to anything me, there's a real energy to being in a room (or field) where people are there to DANCE and not look cool. I love it. Some of the best nights I've had have been completely sober just going crazy with the music.

When I graduated from high school I went into the Marines. I became good friends with a corpsman in my unit. His musical tastes were broader than my own at that time. He introduced me to happy hardcore and since then my musical library consists mainly of dance music.

I have only been to one rave. It was in Santa Monica, California. I was stationed in 29 Palms, CA at the time. I was totally sober the whole time and filled with energy unlike any I have felt until that time.

I am mainly into trance right now. I have recently started listening to goa trance. I think Goa Gil is a very wise man and his music is pretty intense.

I want to get into the production side of trance and maybe find someone to learn me the ways of the dj.

Wow thats really awesome to hear guys! I love hearing people describe the awesome energies when the music just takes you to far away places in the mind and you just lose yourself in the vibe of the whole thing.

That's been harder to come by in Pittsburgh lately though. UK hardcore was HUGE here for a couple years, and I love the stuff but it definately sets a different tone for an event. Things changed though, and really grimy dark genres like dubstep are getting really popular and also really dark, slow creepy music like minimal techno and overall it makes it harder to have that magical feeling like you've been transported to a beautiful place musically. Plus freaking electro house will just NOT die.

SYNERGY and MCPACKER - I got tired of this so I actually started playing trance again this year (after playing really aggressive hardtechno for a while) and have 3 '09 mix sets recorded if you guys are interested in hearing them. It was nuts how the kids were dying to hear stuff like that again. I'm currently the only Pittsburgh DJ playing it and trust me there's lots of us. MCPacker, totally get into producing! Do you play instruments too? I do and people have been encouraging me to get into producing as I've had a lot of musical training on the keys. DJing it is a totally different creative aspect of it, but the whole creation side is awesome because YOU made it, and instead of artfully weaving others creations together. Who are some of your favorite artists/djs?

Yally - no, sorry to burst your bubble mate ecstacy typcially is NOT vegtetarian or vegan. Like any other pills, typcially gelatin is used to press them. Molly or sass might be ok as they're loose, but pressies? Nuh uh sir. No matter which way you look at it they're illegal and you never know what you're getting. If people can cut coke with baby laxitives imagine what else they don't mind throwing in the mix.

Especially now a lot of pills are cut with research chemicals like 2ci, 2cb, and also Piperazine, which has effects distantly similar to E but is way worse for your body. The vast majority of E's going around right now are actually pretty dangerous, and are made to look more harmless than ever. Brightly colored Bart Simpson heads, the transformers, and holy Jesus I saw Obama-head pills at a house party the other weekend. Yes, a hit of E with Barack Obama's face pressed on them.

But yeah dude, the feeling you get from just going out there and dancing however you want not surrounded by douchebags in a club barely moving (out there for the sake of the almighty pussy) is so refreshing and awesome.

Glad I had some positive responses to this though thanks!

Yeah they're deffo not veg friendly at all. And yeah the obama pills were definately a hoot. I looked them up on pillreports when i was at the party and they were basically full of research chemicals and garbage. I dont think anybody even took them. Drugs aren't safe even when they are what people say they are but they're REALLY unpredictable anymore.

What's wrong with fans of electronic music? Nevermind I associate with them all the time I think I understand where you're coming from hahaha.

Ravers are a weird group of peeps I'll give you that.

There are many artists and djs I like and its too hard to name them all. Some of the bigger ones are Tiesto, Above&Beyond, Armin van Buuren(Going to go to a show on Oct. 8th), Gabriel and Dresden, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk, Sasha and ATB. Some others are Breakfast, DJ Tatana, Ron van den Beuken, Gouryella(though I did list them already), Orbital and anything with Kirsty Hawkshaw singing.

I played the baritone in school and briefly guitar. I was pretty sick for close to 11 years and did not do much. I'm going to get an acoustic guitar this week so I can continue learning how to play. I also might get a wooden flute to mess around with.

I plan on also getting some equipment to start learning how to produce trance. I have massive amounts of freetime to devote to this. I imagine the only way I will get good at it is by trial and error.

I would love to hear some of your sets:nana:

I haven't read the whole thread but I will later. I don't rave anymore but I AM and will ALWAYS be a raver....or a Candy Kid or a love warrior...whatever you wanna call it!! I used to LIVE for parties when I was back home in MN. The winter months were filled with warehouse parties and the summers were filled with parties on the beach.

First and foremost there is SUCH a sense of love, acceptance and community in that scene. It's the only place I've ever spent SO much time with SO many people and had close to NO negativity!! It really and truly is an amazing experience to spend countless hours with hundreds of people and SO much positive energy...even if most of 'em are on E, candy flippin or hippie flippin....either way everyone is full of love!!

I miss it. I moved to Florida and the scene was just different there. There was a lot of coke at the parties and it completely changed the whole feeling. It was as though there was a divide and the parties there didn't have that same sense of community. That's when I sort of got out of the party scene. I haven't been to one in YEARS but if I ever have the opportunity to hit one up that had the same positive vibe that I know and love I'd be down!!

I really miss just FEELING the music. I never understood (and still don't) people that listened to music. I don't want to LISTEN to anything. I want to FEEL it!!!

Gotta go but I'll check back in this thread later. I'm going to find some old pictures. I'm feeling nostalgic!!

Peace & Love!!

Funny this thread started. A girl friend and I were just talking about going to Ultra in Miami next year. We lived in Florida together for about 3 years and we never made it. I think I'm going to REALLY think about it now. :sunny:

Oh, I went to see Tiesto in Victoria Park a couple of month ago. I didn't know who he was but my friend is a huge fan. I actually really enjoyed it, it was just a lot of fun. I almost fractured my elbow jumping the barrier into the gold circle, but it was a lot more fun than I expected it to be. Lots of fire and lights, I'm easily amused :p
