I have read so many times that vegan cheese is no good, that I just didn`t want to try it. (I`m vegetarian, not vegan.) But since I am trying to minimize my intake of dairyproducts, I decided to give it a try anyway. So today I used some "cheddar" on a tortilla. (Tortilla, ketchup, cheddar, another tortilla on top. Heat it in a pan until cheese is melted. My LoveBug looves this as a snack/easy lunch.) I was not at all sure I would like the vegan cheese, but to my surprise it was really good!! :D Yay!

But is is waaay expensive, though. 8 tiny slices costs $7. Yeah, it`s fun to live in Norway. :wall:

I have been a little "afraid" to try vegan options to things like milk, cheese, yoghurt, sour cream etc. I don`t know why, it just felt like a scary thing to do. Maybe because it is SO costly, and I`m a low income singlemama, and would really hate to have to throw food away because we didn`t like it. But now I think I will be brave enough to try more vegan options. :D I do drink oatmilk, not cowsmilk, so I have started a little bit already. :)

Yay. I'm glad you liked it. Some people love the fake cheese and others hate it. I like some varieties with crackers

That's great!!! My little ones and I love the Rice Milk slices too. Don't be afraid to give them a whirl, they make delish grilled "cheese" sandwiches.

We don`t have many choices here, when it comes to vegan options. Not many at all, actually. :( I have never seen another cheeseoption than this. (Well, same bran has another cheese, a "mozzarella") Other than that, none. But I hope I will find a few other options, when I start searching every store and healthfoodstore around. :)

I would LOVE to have a dairyfree option for cheese on a sandwich, too. Not cheese that I need to melt, but hard cheese I can have on a slice of bread, with lettuce, bell peppers etc on top. But I don`t think I`ve ever seen anything like that here. Will have to do a better search. :)

You are not the only person to feel this way, it seems to be a pretty common perception of all things that carry the scary vegan label.

Personally I'm not a massive fan of v/cheeses although the Sheeze smoked cheese is pretty good as the texture is similar to the dairy version.

I was really afraid to try vegan cheese too, and I am vegan! Finally just a couple weeks ago I went to an animal rights/veg group meeting, and they always only have vegan food. There is a local pizza chain that serves vegan pizza, so they got some, and I still had to be convinced by a friend to try it. So I did, very reluctantly, expecting the worst, and my goodness, it tasted just like mozzarella cheese from a cow! I was shocked. So then I used some on some eggplant "parmesan" last week, and again, I really thought it tasted just like it! I still didn't drench it in cheese, just a sprinkling, just in case :)

I haven't tried the slices yet though. Maybe I will.

I never did like cheese though

What brand was it? It's good to see positive posts about vegan cheese as so many slate it. If it was as bad as people make out then it wouldn't exist as it wouldn't sell, I don't know why there's such animosity towards it.

Because it tastes vile! ;)

To the OP: I'm glad you found a vegan cheese you like. It would make re-creating some omni dishes a lot easier if I could find one I liked.

I've only ever tried one vegan cheese, and was that traumatised by it that I've vowed never to try another :p

what brands do you get? i think being in europe you might do very well on the yogurt side of things. :) if you ever see sojasun (http://en.sojasun.com/) grab it. their yogurt is delicious..... the chocolate dessert.... provamel (http://www.provamel.com/Noo_ENG/getpage.asp?i=10) desserts are less yogurty, more like a custard, but also fabulous. alpro-soya (http://www.alprosoya.co.uk/soya-products-dairy-free/yogurt-alternatives.html?no_cache=1) is also really really nice, they do the provamel desserts too, and their cream is delicious on fruit. :)

The cheese and sour cream are Tofutti. :) (Tofutti Cheddar) The cream is Alpro, and the yoghurt I thought about buying is Alpro, too. :)

LoveBugMama where did you find the Tofutti Cheddar? I am in the "non-dairy cheese is revolting" camp, but I've been thinking about trying some new brands again lately. We are going to be in Trondheim in a couple of days, so if you found it in Life or someplace like that, we might have a look too. I've never seen Tofutti cheese in the UK.

Pure (the company that makes the yummy margarine) is supposed to have a UK/Europe available cheese out now too, but I've not seen it anywhere, and neither of our local HFS can find it either. I'm hoping to run into some at the Vegan Festival in London.

I bought the cheese at the healthfoodstore at a center called City Lade. But I would think that most healthfoodstores here has this cheese, as it is the only vegancheese I have found here in Norway. Some bigger grocerystores has it too, I think. Maybe Ultra, or Ica Maxi. :)

Have fun visiting!! :D

Cool! That`s good to know, that the few brands we have are considered good ones. :) I actually have a Tofutti Creamcheese, too. Garlic, I think? It`s actually pretty good. :)

But is is waaay expensive, though. 8 tiny slices costs $7. Yeah, it`s fun to live in Norway. :wall: It's fun to live in America, too. A 950ml jar (32 oz) of Vegenaise can easily set me back about $6-$7 (usd). :brood:

Digressing, digressing... I looked up Tofutti Cheddar to see if it was available in US and I found it isn't. :( The moz and American are all we can get out here and I think it's the American that I see the most of (I recognise the label).

Has anyone in US tried the American and if so, was it good?

Goodness Direct is awesome! I've never asked a stockist because I didn't know it existed. Now that I think about it though, I vaguely recall some Tofutti slices that I've seen Stateside..is that what you guys are talking about?

I never really missed cheese after going vegan so I'm not really into veganized versions of it. I've tried numerous brands and the only one I enjoy is to Follow Your Heart brand. It smells funny when melted but tastes pretty good. Pretty expensive though so I don't really bother with it all too much.

Nutritional yeast (or anything else) is not sold “in bulk” at $1/lb either (like I read on VB), but costs about $14/lb. Luckily neither are staples one really needs.

To the OP, I’m not a fan of vegan cheese myself (tried only two or three kinds so far, none of them Tofutti, due to availability issues, lol) and prefer avocados. But I would recommend trying Alpro Yoghurt some time. The fruit and varieties and vanilla are best IMO, but even the plain white (yofu) tastes very decent.

I have tried the American and it is quite passable in a grilled cheese sandwich. It doesn't taste exactly like the real thing, but it is close enough. I should add a disclaimer that I haven't had real cheese in the last 2.5 years, so my cheese taster may be out of practice. I do know that it didn't make me spit it out immediately like some of the other vegan cheeses I've tried have.

In summary, good in grilled cheese. Also good in a cold sandwich with a ton of Vegenaise (but what wouldn't be?)
