Sorry, I feel really stupid asking this question - but I need to know!
When people talk about sprouting legumes/beans - like chickpeas - are they using dried ones to sprout? I can't imagine that you'd use canned for sprouting, but I've only seen dried apart from that.
On another thread there was talk of using sprouted chickpeas in raw hummus. So would you sprout from dry chickpeas and then use just the new sprouty-bit, or do you use the whole thing?
Told you it was silly - but I'm so confused!

Yes - dried ones (canned won't work :))

You have to soak the dried beans overnight to "reconstitute" them.
Check the other sprouting thread in this forum!! :)

Please dont feel stupid!! You are so smart for learning about this way of eating. We're never taught it so how would you know. These are really good questions. When you make the hummus you would use the whole thing.
Remember anything from a can is cooked, thus it is dead, and things that are already dead can't be sprouted.

how long would you sprout a chickpea before using it for hummus? I love hummus and would love to use sprouted to have live hummus.
sheri, I think chickpeas are ready to use as soon as the sprout equals the length of the chickpea - about 2-3 days :)

cool, I hope to buy some when I get a chance to go shopping. I wish the whole foods markets were closer to where I live, especially with gas prices so high right now.
