Yep. As of 1 September 2008 we had about 35,000 members (according to the article on Wikipedia). Now in early August we're up to 44,326. Assuming we'll reach the 10,000 target, then that would be a 28% increase  in membership in just one year.
Just thought this was interesting :)

That is awesome.
Although, why do so many people create accounts and then never use them?

VB really is becoming more popular every day. The way I found VB was a google query about an ingredient back in 2007. I joined up right after I found it. These days, when I google something veg*an, VB is usually on the first page of hits.
I never heard of it in its first 6+ years. But now I run in to it every day. Plus, I almost live here. All my other favorite sites take a back seat to VB. That's because VeggieBoards rocks!

I arrived here the same way as sleepy.... A google search for a recipe or some food item and VB was the first result. Then I browsed, love it and joined it!!!
Stoked im one of those 35,000... I joined in september last year.... I guess that means I count!

It would be more interesting if they actually stayed around and posted. :)

Yeah, it's weird we always seem to have the same amount of people on even though 20-30 new people join each day.

How many of those were trolls who were banned within a week for coming here to take the piss?

Bah, such negativity! :)

If they're banned, they don't show in the totals. There are, however, a LOTTA members who join and never return. Or posted once or twice, and for whatever reason, chose not to stick around. Or who join and lurk, simply reading our conversations for their own education and entertainment. The didn't have to join to read, but they did anyway. I strongly believe that steady lurkers are as much a part of the VB community as the most prolific posters.

Thanks, that indirectly answers my question. I just feel there have been quite a lot of time wasters lately.

What's your definition of a time-waster, and whose time are they wasting?

That happens on my messageboard too. People come and go. There are always the memebers that have been around for years and never go away though. Most newbies get interested at first and then either a/ forget the site exists b. get too busy c. join another forum.
Compared to other messageboards VB is pretty active. Since myspace, facebook, etc have become popular a lot of messageboards have been far less active.

I'm one of the lurkers here.. I often don't even log in to lurk. I enjoy educating myself by reading posts here, however I do not post often because of a somewhat hostile attitude I've observed here.. This might explain some of your other nonactive members.

I have been a come and go member. Sometimes I'm very active - sometimes I forget about it for months. My husband is a lurker type - he has been on one board for many years and has maybe 50 posts - but he reads a lot and gains a lot. In a place like this where we hope to show others how a vegetarian lifestyle is doable and even awesome, I think its totally fine that people just lurk. Every new vegetarian is a good thing.

Just noticed we are now only 20 members short of making it to the magical 45,000 members limit by 1st of September, which would mean we've had 10,000 new members in the past year! Do you think we can make it? :)

I'm confused. when I check the member list it says there are 33915 members.... what gives?

Well... It seems the 45,000 figure actually includes everyone who ever signed up. Trolls, spammers, sockpuppets, little devils and their grandmother etc. However, this is the number provided to us by the software, and also the number that other sites use for their stats. So therefore that is the number we go by. Otherwise it would be like comparing apples and oranges.
Now, give me 20 members by midnight on Monday! :)

so we've banned over 11,000 spammers/trolls/etc? DANG! (and people say Mods don't do anything...)
