Ok so first I have to battle my son to get some tofu. On Tuesday I had to fight the kid off to get some of the kale that I made for myself. It was just kale sauted with olive oil and garlic but he was gobbling it up like it was cake or something.

I am beggining to think that if I make healthy foods and put them on MY plate it makes him curious about them and he will try it. Had I put the food on his plate or asked him to try it I don't think he would have. But I guess when it is on my plate he can't resist asking for a bite. I even have pictures as proof LOL

:bobo: What ever it takes I guess!

*Drool* Sauteed kale with garlic is unbelievable yummy. And so healthy!

It's really good with a dash of smoke seasoning, or a bit of vinegar.

yep, thats a great tactic. also quite a good one is saying that its quite grownup food when they ask about it (cos what little boy wants to be considered too much of a baby for something?!).

if you try and persuade people (even child-people) to do things, the smart ones catch on real quick and question your motives. but if you don't even try and offer it as an option, but visably partake of and enjoy it yourself, they'll think "hey, thats interesting- she likes that- why is there none here?! i wanna get me a sample!".

:shifty:

oh yeah.. and i'm glad your small person is enjoying new things- you're on a roll here! :D

It's also a good strategy when it comes to picky husbands. :shifty:

That's awesome, GK. I love when young kids take to yummy, healthy foods.

Works on little girls just as well. ;) With my nieces in particular, I've learned to pretend that all "new food" is "just not for kids" and of course they are falling all over themselves to get some.

I'm going to have to try using this technique on my son. My husband somehow managed to get him to eat peas today. It wasn't easy.

I inadvertantly learned this when I bought chocolate soy milk and told my husband it's not his, and he won't like it, and he shouldn't even try it.

And came back to find it ALL GONE.

I never had kale before I became a vegetarian. I like it raw in a salad with Italian food. Something about the combination of kale and italian spices is really good.

looks like you're doing a great job of getting your son into healthy, varied habits that he will thank you for when he's older. :) Great job!

Jen, I'm still giggling over "small person" and "child-people" and will be using these terms in future.

I have some extremely picky "sugartarian" nieces and nephews that I will have to try this on! I can't wait!

I have been wanting to make Kale, but needed a recipe...thanks! Do you stem it first?

That's so cute! I remember many years ago when my daughter was little, she ate cabbage from my plate telling me she "wants some more kibbiges".Good for you for setting a good example.

I do that all the time with my daughters (both putting their food on my plate, and telling them such-and-such is only for grown-ups). That got them hooked on lentil curry couscous!

My 7 year old (Mei) used to be a picky eater and would often turn down food without ever trying it because she didn't like the way it looked. She is getting better now. When she was a picky eater I noticed that if she saw me often eat a particular food she would ask to try it.

A couple years ago I discovered a little trick that works fabulously with her. If there is a new food that I want her to try, I wait for a moment when my wife and daughter are together and whisper to my wife that I bought some of such and such food and it's really good and I want to eat it all myself so don't tell Mei about it. Of course, I whisper loud enough so Mei will hear me. Right after that Mei tells my wife that she want's some of that food. When I first started doing that Mei didn't know that I was tricking her. She seems to understand it now but still goes along with it because she gets a kick out of going through that routine. Whenever I do it she's all smiles.

I don't tend to bother, because I usually pick the young leaves... But you could if you wanted to.
