I hope who is responsible for this will be charged with neglect. Those poor dogs!

I think people aren't properly warned about leaving dogs in cars

These were specially trained dogs managed by professionally trained dog handlers. If these idiots don't learn 'dogs die in hot cars' during all of that training then we've got all sorts of problems.

And it's horrible! I suspect that if this happened in the US, there wouldn't be much investigating. I hope I'm wrong but I don't know.

I think there would be some kind of investigation if it occurred here in the US. Especially if it made the news; there would certainly be an uproar over it, and people would demand an investigation.

And the fact that people would be upset and demand investigations makes me happy. I guess I've just lost faith in the cops around here, and the state of AL in general. Police here are brutal and hardly ever get what's coming to them (no offense to straight cops! I know you're out there somewhere).

I wish people like them would get charged with murder, not just neglect.

You are totally right, I agree, but that probably won't happen. I really hope the person who is responsible won't just get a slap on the wrist. Because of him, two poor animals died, it's unforgivable. It's sickens me so much, and I am so angry. :grr:
People need to take resposibility for their animals, those dogs didn't ask to be locked in a hot car, they were innocent, and they were totally dependent on humans. It's so horrible, there are no words I could think of right now! (only VERY ugly ones)

I agree completely, but sadly it is not considered murder even though it should be. Especially since with the training that an officer that handles a police dog receives, there is no excuse for this behavior. He or she was not an ignorant pet owner (not to say that being ignorant is an excuse either) and should have know better to leave those poor dogs in the car. Innocent animals died because of neglect and I hope that the police officer gets charged for the crime he committed and is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

you couldnt charge the cop who was responsible for this with murder cuz that would suggest that he did it premeditatedly, which im sure he really didnt. it would have to be a lesser charge of dogslaughter or something. it was dumb for that cop to do what he did, but i think it was just a case of straight up ignorance regarding the pitfalls of hot weather cuz english people are just not used to dealing with it on a regular basis. ive seen english tourists do the craziest **** in my country in the heat so i know how they just dont think sometimes in regard to issues like dehydration. im sure the guy must be pretty upset cuz doghandler cops usually have a pretty close relationship with their dogs.

There was a phone-in on BBC Radio Two today on this item. They were saying that the police have been issuing warnings to the public on the dangers of leaving dogs in cars so the copper concerned really had no excuse!
Guy from the RSPCA was saying that every time this happens, someone says "I was only a few minutes, I didn't realise it could happen so quickly".
RSPCA are considering what action to take as the Police Complaints Authority apparently say it doesn't fall in their remit as the copper concerned was off duty at the time.

This was such a sad story, I hope if anything that other people learn from it (seems they rarely do though).

This is especially bad not just because of the death of the animals, but the amount of money that goes into training a K-9 unit dog. Think, professional animal trainers, animal handlers, etc. Imagine how much money that police department just wasted on those animals.

I told my brother-in-law about this today who's a military police officer, and he just shrugged his shoulders and totally nonchalantly said "That happens sometimes with military police dogs too, it's nothing new". I was like wtf how can you be so like whatever about it? Pissed me off.

Though, usually those "few minutes" are a half hour and longer.

That's true, of course. How many of us (we who would NEVER leave a dog in a parked car, at least without rolling down the window part way for ventilation) say we're only running in somewhere "for just a few minutes", and then when we get back to our car we realize we were inside for way longer than that? Time gets away from us. I only wish the idiots who willingly leave their dogs in a parked car would remember that. :grr:

According to today's paper, the RSPCA are still looking into pressing charges - maximum sentence is six months in prison or a £20,000 fine.

This exact same thing happened in my town (U.S.) about 10 years ago. I remember a lot of discussion about it, but much of the talk seemed to focus on the amount of money the trained police dog was worth, rather than the suffering of the dog himself. :-/ I do not remember if the police officer was charged for what he did.
In recent years I have noticed that K-9 police cruisers have electric fans mounted in their windows.
