i just read this in my backpacker magazine...and cried. i havent' gone to that site yet, but i will in a minute. i hope those &#@%^((@&*$ die.
 That reminds me of those bears that are tortured throughout their entire life for that gallbladder.
"...In white uniforms, and without any emotion on their faces, the four men
went into one of the cages. They quickly used a steel wire to snatch the
bear by the neck, at which point the bear's eyes bulged out and it
started gnashing its teeth and crying. They are so scared to death and
this trauma causes them to defecate at the same time.
In the bear's stomach there is a hole with a steel tube inserted
directly into the gallbladder. Outside the area there is a plastic tube
connected to the steel tube for drawing the liquid. The area is covered
tightly with surgical tape. When the time comes, the tape and cover are
removed and a syringe is used to withdraw the green liquid from the
gallbladder. Three big men went in and pressed bear's 4 legs with force
and inserted a syringe into plastic tube . When the dark green
gallbladder juice was sucked from bear's body, the poor bear opened her
mouth so big, her two eyes were bulging and her entire body was
trembling so hard throughout the whole procedure.
This kind of severe torturing went on for about two hours until all the
bears had been subjected to the same torture. The crying and screaming
was so hard and loud and echoed the entire mountain and valley. It
frightened me so much, my heart ached and my head started spinning..."

As much as I hate, I HATE, reading about this kind of stuff I have basically blown off my school work this last week and read so much crap that I can't believe people could do this to animals. I'm glad I don't live near where this stuff goes on because I'm pretty sure I'd end up in jail. :gun: I wish there was something productive I could do about it, but what? I donate money where and when I can, but I really desire to get some hands on experience helping out these animals. It's terrible...really terrible that so many people have no conscience. At least here at VB I don't seem to have to hide my hatred for these  evil people. Not that I'm an angel, I'm terrible at being a person, but at least I'm a human being. These people are the real animals.

i agree..althougth, i think the hatred i have for these scum is a lot more than most peopel, even here. i honestly feel ill from reading all this. i spent the last hour looking at that site..and i have been bawling the entire time. my cat thinks i'm crazy. i just sent a long email to about twenty people..unfortunately, i dont think most of them even really care, and heh, after reading my anger, they may not be my friends any more. nah, they know me well enough to understand, hopefully.

 This kind of stuff makes me just sick. I'm at a loss for words. :(
I'm with you guys. No words for the hatred I feel for these people! The most frustrating thing is to know that it is going on but not to have any power to change anything. I see passing on information as really essential. There are so many people out there who don't know about these things, and spreading the word might eventually bring a change in the future, when enough people care.
If this day ever comes.

I think we all feel the same way. It's incredibly depressing and frustrating - words cannot describe the frustration.

This could possibly fall into the life and death circumstances that many on VB have said that they wouldn't judge. Many people in Russia are desperately poor.

That does not make it okay. There is abolutely NO justification for torture like this. I don't care if someone is poor or starving, there are other ways than torture to survive. I have been poor a fair bit of my life, not always knowing where my next meal was coming from or even where I might lay my head down at night, but I did not resort to torture. Not even when I worked at the plant and everyone did cruel things all the time. You cannot make excuses or defend this type of behavior. There is no reason good enough. If you find one, even one, someone else will say, "but..." Not buts, no what ifs. Never. Not acceptable for any reason. No.

I will always "judge" torture to a nonhuman animal as wrong and unacceptable no matter what the circumstances. Always.

i agree with cyberactivist and mountainvegan...they said it well. that does NOT make it okay. are you okay with the current gorilla slaughter for foodgoing on in Africa ?
poaching is murder. it's illegal. it's obviously unethical, to put it extremely lightly. i'll gladly judge those selfish greedy bastards who did this. i hope they get what they deserve, what i mentioned in my first post.

I think I know what mushroom really meant, which was to criticize the maybe too-tolerant views some on VB have, not to claim the bear tragedy to be acceptable.

If it was truly life and death they would have eaten the bears. They would have skinned them and sold the fur. All they were doing is making a profit out of a minor part of the bear's body... this is not life and death (although it is for the bears). This is poaching, pure and simple and evil... waste, like the old bison hunters who would take only the tongue and hide....

Too tolerant? Here we go again.

I do not see the bear tragedy as acceptable. I see it as horrific. Yet, aside from the illegality of the poaching, I don't see a lot of difference between the poachers and those who purchase meat at the grocery store. Isn't it just a little inconsistent to HATE the poachers, yet LOVE our omni friends?

So, are you going to start hating omnis or loving poachers?
...I don't see a lot of difference between the poachers and those who purchase meat at the grocery store. Isn't it just a little inconsistent to HATE the poachers, yet LOVE our omni friends?
I can see your point. There are still some differences:
-cows are not endangered animals, bears are
-I like my friends even though they are omnis, because they are my friends, and I manage to see past the fact that they purchase and eat meat. I don't have any butchers as friends. If I had a friend that killed animals for a living (not very probable) - even just for the skin - I probably would like that friend despite what he/she did, otherwise he/she would not be my FRIEND. That would not mean that I'd have to love all poachers or butchers. Nor all omnis.
If you stress your question in a different way you know what I mean:
Isn't it inconsistent to hate THE poachers and love OUR omni FRIENDS?

I have done for country and my oun family now as a father things that will result in an eternity spent in hell. If I had no wife or children i would go and dedicate my life to two pursuits. two pursuits which some may not agree with but I would hunt poachers, poachers of Ivory in africa, bears as in this article, then as part of this i would hunt those that buy from poachers and end them as well, then I would hunt those who harm children.
Oh yea and way to go to the reasearcher for living with the bears...what a moron he most likely took away there fear of humans...what a waste.
