For those of you looking for a GREAT workout with little impact on your joints, ankles, feet, etc., then give rowing a try. If you've never done it and you've seen one at a gym, give it a shot! It's my favorite form of exercise and my absolutely favorite sport. Totally worth the energy. Oh and you don't have to be on the water to do it. Indoor rowers are pretty similar to the real thing, and just as good for working out.

I've always wanted to try rowing. It looks like so much fun! I think I'm in a pretty good city for it (Philly), but I have no clue how to get involved.

A few resources in the Philly area:

Good GOD am I jealous of where you live! Holy cow, in taking just a quick peek at the second weblink I found more than a handful of clubs in Philadelphia!!! You're so lucky! I can't wait to move to San Diego someday so at least I'll have my Mission Bay on which to row!
If jumping into the club scene or even taking beginner classes seems daunting, you could find a local gym that has an indoor rower (rowing machine/ergometer/rower etc. it's all the same thing) and give that a try. You'll find that rowing is a very natural movement--it's hard to mess up! Best of luck in your envious adventures in Philly!

I have a rowboat that we use on the town lake...I couldn't believe how effortless it was, the first time I tried rowing!!

Yeah, I agree. In a gym but I think it would be a blast on water.

Yeah I wouldn't want to do it in the gym. But I love canoeing and kayaking, so I think it would be great to do it in the water.

I used to love rowing in the gym we used to go to. Haven't done it in yrs, but did enjoy it.
Doing the seated Row on a stationary Nautilus machine is no fun at all, but effective, just not the same though!
It gives you a great looking back, arms and legs!

I LOVE rowing! I've been trying to convince my friend to incorporate it into her workout, but she claims that it feels like nothing is happening. Rowing completely changed my arms and gave me great definition w/o getting bulky (my muscles tend to get really big).
